Pre-pro Jeffrey Jones did this story & art ca. 1965 for Bill Spicer's stripzine Fantasy Illustrated #5, 1966. You can see some direct Al Williamson swipes, including the figure in panel 5 being taken directly from the same pose of Dr Zarkov in a King 'Flash Gordon' comic book drawn by Williamson!; image area 12x18"
