Description

Page 5 of my full Flash 226 story by Steve Lightle.

Here we have great use of verticality in terms of layout to enhance the presence of the Mountain.

The first, half-splash panel is plain gorgeous and fantastic in conveying the sense of surroundings. Note how Steve used the shape of the rocks AND the placement of the word balloons to lead the reader's eye. Great use of stark black & white as well as depth with the misty mountain far away.

Then the next panels are placed in such a way that they really give you the impression that you are following a roped line of mountaineers, a feeling which is, again, enhanced by the balloon placement.

Consistent with the work of any thoughtful storyteller, Steve used various angles and shots to make those panel interesting to the reader's eye.

Lastly, pay attention to the position of the mountaineers in panel 1, as they veer to the left whereas in panel 4, they walk to the right, giving a nice symmetrical sense to the whole page.

No big fight or explosions on this one, just great, masterful and quiet storytelling at work.

I like how the Flash embroiders his own accessories!  Hey, it's all about the marketing.

Quite the irony that they all look like Captain Cold.

Indeed a beautiful layout. Love the mountain scenery in the 1st panel. Beautifully rendered but not overly. Congrats!

You nailed it in your write up, Fred; beautiful storytelling, the foundation of which was built with the big vertical splash of the mountain (and then just plain showing off, using the people and word balloons alike to expertly usher the reader's eye where they need to go).  Fantastic use of black and white throughout (love that panel 3's "hollow" panel border is filled while panel 5's is not... and the way the people weave through panel 4... Masterfully done).  It must be fun to look through a complete issue of original art, especially one as lovely as (and executed as well as) this one.  Congrats, F M!

Lightle was indeed a very strong storyteller, a skill that isn't given enough attention by fans. Like James mentioned, I love that Flash decided it was a good idea to embroider his lightning bolt insignia onto his backpack!

A great demonstration of how Lightle's artistic skills went beyond just drawing traditional superhero action.
