DescriptionWhile last week's (previous) page (in this story) was all about verticality, this double spread is evidently quite horizontal.I find that it made sense to upload both back-to-back as Steve Lightle obviously used/designed both axes/pages in a sequential manner. This one is quite spectacular (as dps often are if well done). The negative/white space used to define the mountain range in the background and the rocky ground the characters are walking on is truly spectacular. It is perfectly in tone with the previous page vertical semi splash. Same as the previous page, the sense of the rangers walking in a file is perfect and you can tell by their body positions that each is carrying heavy mountain gear. Then we have a series of 6 regular smaller panels that cleverly and carefully mirrors the group progression in the upper splash. What a great device. This makes for easy reading and fluid eye progression. In those panels, Wally West is falling sick while the team is debating what should be done about him. Lightle used various shots and angles to keep the reading interesting to the reader's eye. Overall, no big fight or explosion on this double spread but it is so carefully designed and executed that one has to be in awe of Lightle's abilities as a storyteller and draughtsman. Beautiful art and storytelling. Is there any backdrop as wonderfully effective as the primal, merciless mountains to discuss survival of a sick or injured party? The stakes are so high among the freezing rock and snow right out of the gate... Awesome. No intended disrespect to the coloring team, but I can't imagine there's any way the published page looks this good; raw, "basic", and elemental. And just as you say, how the horizontal layout is used is brilliant; each of their players given their own "panel" in the top spread as you read from left to right, your eye hopping from caption box to caption box. Then your eyes get pulled down to the characters by the word balloons on the far right, where they can then travel with the party from right to left visually to get back to the start of the panels of tier two. Absolutely delicious! Great spread, F M! Congrats!

Someone get that man some acetazolamide, stat! Or at the very least some cream of wheat. Cream of wheat won't cure him but who would turn down a bowl of yummy cream of wheat.

A killer spread/splash by a fabulous storyteller taken from us far too soon!
