DescriptionThe Big Three! For the Avengers, it’s Cap, IM, and Thor. For the Defenders, it’s Doc, Subby, and Hulk. For the JLA, it’s Supes, Bats, and WW. Now I give you, The Big Three and a half. LOL!
I really thought the animation on B&B was something special. Led by the great Glen Keane, the team of animators on this film were nothing short of spectacular. While the lead characters were certainly the stars of the film, you still couldn’t take your eyes off anyone who happened to be in whatever scene you were watching. The supporting characters were every bit as special and watchable. Whether it was Gaston, Lafou, Cogsworth, Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, Maurice, Philippe, Chip, or the Wardrobe – you just couldn’t imagine the movie without any of them. Certainly, the comedic duo of Lumiere and Cogsworth stole the show. So to have four of those beloved characters (each drawn by their respective supervising animator), on one piece together is just so mind blowing for me. Rendered in blue pencil on 12 Field animation paper, Mrs. Potts & Chip are drawn by Dave Pruiksma, Lumiere is drawn by Nik Ranieri, and Cogsworth is drawn by Will Finn. What’s really cool is that each animator used a different type of blue pencil to signify that each character was drawn by a different artist. I just love that. The piece is signed and dated only by Ranieri, so it’s uncertain if the three of them were there together and did this in the same session, or if they were done at different times and places. In any case, this truly is one of my most cherished Disney treasures. Of course, my grail would be a drawing of Beast by Keane (hey, a guy can dream). But until such a miracle transpires, this is my B&B grail. Anyway, next week we will conclude our consecutive run of Disney postings with the grand finale. For those of you who have been waiting (or even still care), the mystery of the porch monster will finally be revealed. Thanks to all of you who have been following these Disney posts for the last month and a half. Hope you had fun and will come back for the big finish. See you next week! Social/Sharing |

Did you pick this up at Heritage? Love these and always tempted to grab one. Prefer these drawings to any cels. So cute and memorable. Congrats!

Fantastic scanning job! This should be in an artists edition.

Ha! Well, since you brought it up. Of the multiple scans I made, I whittled it down to two and chose this one. The other setting matched the colors better, but ultimately ended up being too light (the puff of smoke above Cogsworth's head barely showed). Just glad this was on animation paper instead of standard A3 bristol, which usually cuts off on my piece of junk scanner. LOL

Beautiful. IMHO, it's too bad the Disney studio transitioned to all CGI animation in recent years. I loved the old paper drawings that animators used to do before having them inked on cels and painted. Now I guess it's all computers all the time. Sigh.

Thanks buddy! Totally agree. Unfortunately, I don't think I can afford anything drawn by any of the Nine Old Men. This may be as close as I get to original drawings associated with a film I love.

Beauty and the Beast hits a nostalgic spot for me due to how many times I watched it with my kids (and I expect I will with their kids when they eventually come). This is such a perfect example of this trio! Congrats Eric!

Thanks Dave! B&B is a very special to me for so many reasons. One of those reasons was something I pondered about including in my description. For whatever reason, I eventually decided to leave it out. But your comment reminded me of how important it is to spend time with the people you love, and to cherish those times. My late sister and I probably watched this together almost as many times as you and your kids. I can remember watching it with her while she was bed ridden after giving birth to my nephew. And it was the last movie we watched together before she died. As always, appreciate the comment my friend.

I would kill for a Glen Keane's Beast piece, but I find this one absolutely charming, terrific addition!
