DescriptionFuture State: The Next Batman #1 Pg. 19. Pencils and Inks by Nick Derington. Written by John Ridley. 1st Full Appearance of Tim Fox as Batman! The lead up to Batman Day this Saturday, September 17th continues! Sharing more Batman related art from the collection to celebrate. "Future State: The Next Batman" is a 4 issue mini series released in 2021 as part of DC Comics' larger Future State initiative across multiple titles/events to showcase a different future timeline with new versions of characters including Batman, Wonder Woman, and others. I didn't read everything that came out as part of that initiative, but this Batman book was by far my favorite one to come out during that period, written by John Ridley and illustrated by Nick Derington. The story is actually pretty damn good and I enjoyed the artwork as well. I recommend catching up on it if you like alternate timeline stories or else-worlds stories with DC. This first issue marked the 1st Full Appearance of Timothy "Jace" Fox (son of Lucius Fox and his wife Tanya) as the new Batman. It was also the 1st team appearance of The Magistrate, a government-sponsored private law enforcement group that polices vigilante activity and the 1st team appearance of the Arkham Knights a villain team made up of Astrid Arkham, Killer Croc, Clayface, Zsaz, Phosphorus, Two-Face. After the establishment of the Magistrate and the apparent death of Bruce Wayne, he (Tim Fox, who now wants to be called "Jace"), succeeded him as Batman. Well that was a mouthful! Anyway, I was happy to add pages by Nick from the book to my collection including this one, which shows Batman approaching/confronting two kids/brothers, who are new recruits to the "Bane-Litos" gang (hence the Bane masks), as the Peacekeepers approach them in the alley, putting the young recruits (and Batman in theory) in danger as they are wearing vigilante/gang masks, which is illegal in Gotham at this time and a "shoot on sight" level offense. Derington seems to be competing with Ethan Van Sciver for "Messiest/Sketchiest pencils". Good thing I love seeing blue pencil alongside the inks! I didn't read this Future State story, but I'll take your word on its quality. I will admit that the Swamp Thing 2-parter was a favourite Future State story of mine. Anyway, nice piece, I like his inking approach.

Thanks Ruben. I did enjoy the 2 part Swamp Thing Future State issues, but not nearly as much as the 16 issue "The Swamp Thing" run by Ram and Mike which followed. For the books that were released that actually had "Future State" in the title, this was my favorite, although I also enjoyed the Yora Flor Wonder Woman run and the Swamp Thing one too. Yeah these blue pencils arent the cleanest in some parts but still cool to see and yeah his inking is more of what I dig about his approach/style in general here.

Oh yeah, I could never choose the Future State 2-parter over the 16 ongoing run, I only pointed it out because you mentioned the Batman Future State, so was only comparing Future State stories. It's interesting that you mention the Wonder Woman Future State story, as I never read it but at the time of release it seemed to be the one I heard the most positive things about.
Don't get me wrong about the pencils. The scribbly parts aren't as "pretty", but they still don't bother me. I love Van Sciver's art and his blue pencil work is scribbly as hell. Sure, I'd prefer it to be a bit cleaner, but it's part of his process and as I say, I LOVE the monochromatic look of the blue tint alongside the inks, so it's all good!

Great piece of history. and I like the simple (yet effective) feel of the art. Looks a bit nostalgic. Congrats my friend.
