Description

A beautiful page from the short-lived Star Hunters series that Don Newton drew 2 issues of before Rich Buckler took over (sadly, as I'd take Newton over Buckler any day).

Anything drawn by Newton was a delight, as his art was strongly planted in its time while paying homage to the great artists and illustrators that came before/influenced him without sacrificing his storytelling (by being too rigid as illustrators tend to be).

Here we have a fun typical SF action page.

The starship's hull has been breached and our swashbuckling Errol Flynn lookalike is thrown in the cold void of space.

Lucky for him, his companion managed to grab a loose cable or rope (always handy in a space ship) and save him in the nick of time.

PS: this is the HISTORICAL issue showcasing first appearance of the character! So great and important!

But gasp ! His shirt is already being ripped by the tremendous pressure. The close up is beautifully drawn and the reader can truly feel the anguish springing from their predicament.

Panel 3 is the obvious and gorgeous money shot with a close up of the sexy Darcy Vale, an evident clothed clone of Dejah Thoris or any space princess.

The layout of the 3 following panels is fun and well-conceived in the sense that is really enhances the action. The fit full body shot is quite nice but so are the various typical 70s space computers and machinery bits.

Newton was really good at everything and we have strong figure work on this page, a fun and more experimental layouts (due to this having been drawn early in his career?) and space action.

Bob Layton's inks nicely complimented and stayed true to Newton's organic art, before he became a more overpowering inker. The page actually looks like it could have been inked by Newton himself.

PS: this is the HISTORICAL first issue/appearance of the characters! So great and important! Let's wait for the certainly upcoming TV show (I’ve heard of rumors…most likely in a Heritage auctions catalogue…) and I'll be rich! RICH!

As a lifelong fan of Newton, i always love to see art of his I havem't seen before.  Superb storytelling and wonderful figure drawing are just some of the things that make Don Newton one of my favorite artists.  The way his figures occupy the space on this page is like a well choreographed ballet.  And, this being early on in his DC career, he was just coming into his own with he best yet to come.  If it weren't for his umtimely death in 1984, I have no doubt he would have been a super star like Byrne or Perez.

Very nice storytelling, which was a strong point of Newton's work. His figures are also nice and I find it especially interesting that the man with his back to us in the 1st panel (who I'm sure will be in a movie soon) appears to simultaneously be fighting and doing a ballet move. The woman, whose name escapes me but whom I'm sure will also be in a movie soon andallow you to sell this page for $35k+ very soon, also looks great in that second to last panel as she swings in ala Black Widow. Layton's inks look far more like Dan Adkins' inks than his own, which is a good thing in this case because they are, as you mention, more complimentary to Newton's pencils than they otherwise would be if he inked it in the style most of us are far more familiar with.

What a beautiful page, F M.  I love the vertical layout of the top half (especially with the "t"-shaped first panel making room for our soon-to-be-silver-screen protagonist's right arm) and how it shifts into horizontal panels for the bottom half of the page.  Very cool.  Beautiful work by Newton all over the place here, but I think my very favorite thing may be the caption-sized "Emergency Sealer" banner next to the switch in panel 6.  With the foot, then the real captions all floated over it, it gives a real mind-bending sense of depth and dimension to it.  Love it!  Great page!

Innovative layout to fit just the right amount action and drama onto the page!  DC was certainly going to beat Marvel to the punch this time for sure in 1977 with Star Hunters over their little "Star Wars" comics.  Newton and Layton was definitely a more slick art team in showing action.  Sure they got their movie tie in, but everyone is saying that it'll flop and it'll go away soon.  Star Hunters is the safer bet when all is said and done.
