Aztek 9 p 4 - Harris and Champagne

This is the fifth page from the short lived Aztek series that I've owned and, with it, I feel like my collecting of this series is complete. I have that rare feeling of satisfaction.

Aztek is the series that should have been the new Doom Patrol when it came out. A quirky book by Morrison and Millar, it tried to blend very traditional super heroics with their flavor of weird.

N Steven Harris and Keith Champagne brought very distinct, dynamic, powerful art to the book. It was appropriately wonky in its angles and panel layouts and built on what Grant and Mark were trying to achieve. This title page to issue 9 is no exception. In another book, the artists would have featured the hero's face or insignia more prominently, these guys foregrounded his fist. And it works, so incredibly well.

I've always been disappointed that Aztek didn't find a long-term home somewhere else. I've been interested in the later interpretations and hope someone finds a place for the character at some point.
