DescriptionGreen Goblin Issue 1 Page18Writer Tom DeFalco Art: Scott McDaniel Published from 1995-1996 during the height of the Clone Saga. Green Goblin tells the story of Phil Urich, Daily Bugle Reporter Ben Urich’s nephew as he discovers a hideout of the Green Goblin (Harry Osborn). The hideout features the a next generation goblin costume, glider and formula. When his Uncle is attacked and Phil is exposed to the formula Phil dons the Goblin costume to save his uncle. Phil then learns very reluctantly that with great power comes…responsibility. Phil’s powers are only activated in tandem with the formula and the circuity in his mask I LOVED this series so much growing up. It was during the time that I was first discovering Spider-Man, his cast, and the entire Marvel 616 Universe. I thought Phil Urich was a great character, reminiscent of how Peter Parker was written by Lee and Ditko but still his own character and It's still my favorite Green Goblin costume design. As artist Scott McDaniel told me said, “this series was a ton of fun! It felt like Marvel comics of old – the young hero trying to find his way in the world through a bunch of fun action! “ This page is the moment after being doused with the Goblin formula and don the mask and head toward the costume. Phil’s time as a hero was short lived. During the Onslaught attack Phil fights a Sentinel while saving the day his glider is destroyed and the mask that gives him his powers damaged beyond repair. This was also the time that Norman Osborn returned and was revealed to be the mastermind of the Clone Saga. Phil’s arc resonated with me as a teenager. It was the first time I had an emotional reaction at a comic being cancelled…it was the first time I realized comics could be cancelled. Phil Urich returned to the world of Spider-Man during Dan Slott’s “Big Time” arc. He breaks bad and ends up taking the mantle of the Hobgoblin. He is eventually killed by Norman Osborn who was wearing the Carnage Symbiotie. Through the years it was a book that stuck with me and I remembered fondly. When Scott announced he would be putting some pages up for sale I knew I needed to get one . Social/Sharing |
