Description

Sharing the painted cover to the latest book by one of my favorite cartoonists, Simon Hanselmann. Hanselmann won multiple awards for his pandemic masterpiece, Crisis Zone, and is following that up with a book dedicated to following the musical misadventures of Megg and Werewolf Jones and their shitty band, Horse Mania.

Also published in Hypnotic Midday Movie, Hanselmann's 2023 art book from Mansion Press.

I'll let the fine folks at Fantagraphics describe Below Ambition:

"Megg and Werewolf Jones are Horse Mania. Horse Mania is a test of the audience's patience, proudly the "worst band in town," without any ambition to make it. Join the musicians as they battle through shoddy, distracted practice sessions, a squalid house show, and a doomed interstate tour. Watch as they drunkenly flail through their sets amidst toothaches, nervous breakdowns, suicide attempts, mounting hatred, and a galaxy of benzos. This is music and performance in its most primal, multifaceted, and pure form. Feel the tension. See the dirty looks. Taste the pain. Smell the depravity. Hear the veiled beauty. Horse Mania wants you to lose your mind."

Hanselmann's painted covers are truly mixed media and incorporate pencil, gouache, food coloring, and watercolor. It's incredibly vibrant.

The Hanselmann pieces that you've posted have made me want to check out his work (I'm way behind on my comic reading, but I'll catch up one day).

Congrats on a great cover, Mark! I concur with your comment to Michael. I read Crisis Zone somewhere around 7 to 10 months ago and can indeed be a bit much, so I've yet to follow up on his other books. YOu really have to be in a certain mood to read this kind of stuff, so I'm just waiting for that mood to hit me again.

Yowza! I love this cover, though I've never heard of the book. I really like the slightly off-kilter nature of Simon Hanselmann's style. Even the description of the book fascinates me. So I'll be checking it out in the very near future. In the meantime, keep putting up unusual and unexpected art! Cheers!
