Wonderfully atmospheric piece illustrating Hannes Bok's "The Blue Flamingo," Startling Stories, January 1948.

I've always wondered why some enterprising person hasn't done a book on Stevens, who generally signed as "Lawrence." In his prime, he was certainly giving Bok and Finlay a run for their money.

Interestingly, in his book on fantasy artists, Robert Weinberg said that "although he was responsible for all of the black-and-white illustrations that appeared under this name (as well as those that appeared under the name Verne Stevens), many of the paintings credited to him were done by his son Peter."

Such a great visual effect when taken in as a whole! Up close you can appreciate the meticulous work that went into such a lavish work.
