DescriptionThis all started with Batman. While waiting for Robert Pattinson to take the screen back in March, I was killing time before the previews when I came across a phenomenal Star Wars piece Jesse posted on his Instagram. I immediately reached out to see if it was spoken for. Sadly, it already had a buyer, but Jesse was open to doing something in a similar vein for me. That got me thinking about Obi-wan Kenobi, a personal favorite whose story I find eminently fascinating. After losing his trusted mentor at the hands of a Sith, he’s promoted to full knighthood and immediately demands the task of training the “chosen one” to fulfill his deathbed promise to Qui-Gon. Reluctantly receiving the Council’s approval, he does his best to train a headstrong Anakin, and watches him grow from a boy into a man he is proud of. Then, in a cruel twist of fate, he’s forced to strike him down and live with the knowledge that he failed as a mentor and a brother. It’s tragic stuff, and Ewan McGregor’s portrayal always rises above the material. So much so that I used to bring a sketchbook to conventions to fill with Ewan Obi-wan sketches. So, with the Disney+ Kenobi series on the horizon, Obi-wan was on my brain when I asked Jesse to take a swing at telling his story. He didn’t have an idea right away, which was fine by me. Jesse’s ideas are like no one else in the biz, so I don’t mind waiting for inspiration to strike. And since both of us were planning to be at this year’s Baltimore Comicon, we set that as our target for delivery. And boy did he ever stay on target! If you’re familiar with Jesse’s comics work, you know he loves to play with the page grid to achieve different effects. Here he uses it to bring Obi’s most famous duels to life in one image that perfectly blends past with present. He even throws Palpatine in the corner as a reminder of the mastermind who orchestrated the greatest tragedies in his life. My sincerest thanks to Jesse for unleashing his creativity in service of this great character. Size: 11x17” Social/Sharing |

Great piece, and maybe I have the initial Star Wars piece you mention. Regardless, we both have great taste!

Simon, it was definitely your piece that I'm talking about in the description. I was not surprised when it showed up in your gallery since, as we've discussed, it seems like our tastes have significant overlap.

It's great because he uses the panels and grids to tell the story just like his published works that so well thought out in the design with tangents and connections split by time and theme.
