Description
As the second Black Panther movie opens on Friday, I thought it’d be a good time to post this piece that was actually created in conjunction with his MCU premiere in Captain America: Civil War. And the first time we see him in costume he’s going after Bucky/The Winter Solider, who at that point T’Challa blames for the death of his father. So here, we get the 2 going at it yet again! You can see “Pop Secret” at the top of the art board :) This was one of four standalone stories, all written by Peter David, that were available by redeeming codes from Pop Secret popcorn – a tie-in to the movie release. Covers were done by Tom Raney, and here we have his cover to a “A Tussle in Time” featuring BP vs WS. And a story that features Kang. Foretelling?!

Raney’s definitely underrated. Always loved his line work, and his inks here on BP are a great example. Love the different line weights throughout, and see that subtle touch of BP’s necklace slightly lifting up to convey movement? Good stuff. I actually don’t think that’s how the necklace works, lol – it’s actually more ornamentation that’s pinned down I think, but I’ll take it here! All about adding to the image. Plus I’m not nit-picky at all ;) And I did already have a BP piece with him holding a sword but didn’t have one yet with him holding a shield :)

As always, thanks for looking!

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed this was a Raney piece! I haven't been following modern day comics very closely, so I wasn't aware that he'd so drastically evolved his style from the one I'm familiar with that he was employing during the back half of the 2000's. Regardless, he stil uses a nice line and I really like how he draws the musculature. As a sucker for historical gladiator combat in the arena, I also love the setting the action takes place in. Very nice addition to your BP collection!

Panther, makes this match with Bucky
No excuses anymore
It's gettin' art, too Tom Raney
I shield my Black Panther now even more

Pop, pop, poppin' Top Secret score
Pop, pop, poppin' Wakanda corn
Shop, shop, shoppin' Tom Raney store
Ship, ship, shippin' to my front porch

Panther, sneak my shoes on the ground
Vibranium ever more
That Sargent Barnes is comin' down
I feel like I'm itchin' to fight Namor

Pop, pop, poppin' Top Secret score
Shop, shop, shoppin' at Raney’s store
Pop, pop, poppin' Wakanda’s corn
Shut, shut, shuttin' microwave’s door

"Shut, shut, shuttin' microwave's door" was perfect, lol!  Too good how you mix all the aspects of the description and piece itself!  Thanks, man, and all, for the comments!

I completely agree about Raney being underrated.  This is one heckuva dynamic cover,

Fantastic and dynamic cover, K!  Beautiful musculature on T'Challa here - serious power coming from that great inking on the full figure.  Of the many cool conflicts in Cap Civil War, the Panther / Winter Soldier moments were my favorites (behind the Cap and Tony scuffles) because of the terrific acting and emotional weight they carried.  But then the fact that the Panther was smart enough, man enough, and King enough to figure out by the end that Bucky was not his true enemy (and to let go of his hate - even to offer Bucky shelter) allowed the Panther to steal the movie from Steve and Tony - who were blind to literally the exact same lesson (death of a parent and who was truly responsible).  Beautiful dramatic cover, K.  Another fantastic add!  Sincere congrats, sir!

That's right!

"Vengeance has consumed you.  It's consuming them.  I'm done letting it consume me."  *CLAW RETRACTION*  "Justice will come soon enough."

And very end of the movie where Steve and T'Challa are talking, we pan over to get a glimpse of Wakanda!  Definitely was BRIMMING with anticipation after that :)

Thanks, man, and glad you dig the piece!

I love Raney and this is a really great piece. I also think Russell Crowe would approve of this.  (I knew a man once who said, "Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back.") I never read this comic, but love a good Gladiator theme. It looks like it would be a great read.

I'm glad you are "ENTERTAINED!" by the cover ;)  Definitely couldn't help but think about that great movie, either!  Thanks, Ian!

A gladiator match between BP and Winter Soldier?  Black Panther weilding a sword and shield?  Tom Raney as the artiste extraordinaire?  That all adds up to "Yes, please!"  Really great addition, K, congrats!

K-TANG! And the crowd goes wild! This is a great battle splash. I won't do the Gladiator joke since it's already been done. ;) Raney really captured great motion in this fight, and I love all the subtle details on BP to make his costume really pop. And I dig the crowd energy. I see you, Fist Pumping Guy. Great find, Kahlil!
