DescriptionLatest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #147, drawn by returning contributor Peter Clinton, and based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case the Jack Kirby/John Tartaglione cover to X-Men #30 (attached in the comments for comparison).Title: "Do You Believe In Magic?" Story: In issue #144, Johnny Quick, Robotman, Liberty Belle and Firebrand were suspended from the All-Star Squadron, only for the Perisphere to be attacked by a group of super-villains, leading to it being destroyed! In the aftermath of the attack, a dropped note revealed the sites for more attacks, and Hawkman coordinated other Squadron members to prevent them. This time - Doctor Fate, carrying Wildcat and the Sandman, speeds towards the country residence of the New York Governor, Herbert Lehman! As the heroes arrive, they find a squad of policeman desperately trying to prevent an attack by The Blue Lama, and at their head is All-Star Squadron member (and secretly New York cop Jim Harper) The Guardian. The police are having little success, however, as the Blue Lama sends demonic figures to engage with them - but as the Guardian falls, the Sandman and Wildcat join the fray, launching themselves into the fight, while Doctor Fate collides with the Blue Lama and knocks her flying. Without his magical powers, however, Fate is only temporarily successful in gaining the upper hand, and the villainess is soon on her feet again, continuing to conjure imps and demons to battle the other heroes! An eye-blast from the Blue Lama streaks towards the New York Governor, but Doctor Fate uses his invulnerable body to deflect the blast and protect Governor Lehman - but realises that this is just a stopgap, and that the Blue Lama's magic will soon prove too powerful for him! At the last minute, the battle is joined by an unexpected combatant - Margo The Magician (last seen in her one-and-only Golden Age appearance in Uncle Sam Quarterly #2, 1941), currently serving on the Governor's staff in her civilian identity of Margo Webster, after escaping from China before it fell under the influence of the Grailstone, and making her way via Australia and South America back to the US. Although Margo's magical powers are limited, she's able to cast an illusion which distracts the Blue Lama for long enough for Doctor Fate to pull himself together - and he then uses his magical knowledge to instruct Margo in casting a more powerful spell! Following Doctor Fate's commands, Margo is able to draw on the powers of the Ruby Of Life to animate the Blue Lama's cloak, wrapping her up and temporarily immobilising her - for just long enough for the Sandman to use his gas-gun to incapacitate her, and Wildcat to knock her out! Margo, guided by Fate, is then able to mystically restrain the villainess, who laments the failure of the plan, claiming that the other villains were supposed to come to her aid --- but the All-Stars' attempts to question her further are interrupted by a shocking message coming to them over their radios (and you'll find out exactly what that message is shortly - but not in the next issue). In the background, Governor Lehman recovers, but remarks to an aide that this has made a decision for him - he will step down early from the Governorship to take up the job offered to him in the US State Department (which he did in the real world, resigning the governorship a month before the end of his term, although presumably without being threatened by a magical villainess). The main pose has such a captivating look to fire off those bolts! It really steals the show as others are reacting and cowering.
