DescriptionIt seems a fitting time given the celebratory nature of the 30th Anniversary of The Death of Superman to share this pair of commissions that I had done awhile back. When I got into collecting commissions I knew one thing, I wanted a big commission celebrating the whole saga from Death to Reign to Return. Over time the idea morphed into two separate pieces. My idea was to have Tom Grummett create pieces that felt they could’ve been hanging on the wall of a 90’s comic shop, a poster advertising the story or just as a poster you could hang on your wall. I knew I wanted the central characters all represented on the piece but also wanted to add some other emotions to it by adding headshots of supporting characters. After all, part of the appeal and success of these stories had to do with the excellent supporting cast so it felt natural to include them. Absolutely love what they add to this already impressive piece!Social/Sharing |

I certainly understand the desire to commission a piece that encompasses the whole saga, but the reality is that even asking for the commission to be done on the larger boards Tom has available, there are just too many characters and scenes to be able to fit everything in without the composition ultimately suffering from being cramped in together. This is already busy enough without feeling cramped. But if you had insisted on squeezing in even one more character, it would've ruined it. Having two great, representative pieces is far better!

Exactly my thoughts too. Tom's list was closed for an extended period of time as I was continually cooking up ideas/layout ideas for an all encompassing piece and ultimately I landed on that same thought, just split it into two pieces. I commissioned this one first and figured I'd then just go back and have Tom do a Death one. I wasn't buying art when all the stuff from this era was "affordable" so when it came to these commissons I wanted to have Tom create something that felt like it could've existed back in the 90's, a time of gatefold posters included with comics and a booming comic shop scene (with posters abound!).

The triangle era comes alive! The figures all pop off with shiny lustre and embossed feel of a special event!

The headshots really help sell the emotions & scope of the story for sure, Lois & Jimmy in awe of these new Supermen & Lex annoyed that his city is populated by even more "heroes."

Wow, that black suit really pops with the bold inking. Classic imagery on a great commission idea - congrats!
