Description

A superb mixed media illustration from JM Watt.

We see a young pre-Tutankhamen Howard Carter, shinning down a rope to confront a group of tomb robbers. Apparently a true event which occurred when Carter worked for the Egyptian Antiquities Service. Carter and his faithful Reis were examining a remote side valley, close to the Valley of The Kings. A freak flash flood had revealed a new tomb high in the cliffs. Carter disturbed the tomb robbers in the act. Showing tremendous guts, Carter severed the robbers’ own rope and demanded they leave via his rope. Stunned at his sudden arrival, they did just that. The tomb itself was unfinished and not used by the original occupant. It did contain a sarcophagus made for Hatshepsut before she ascended to the throne as pharaoh.
