DescriptionUltimate Green Goblin appears for the very first time, dramatically wreathed in flames, on this exciting page from USM issue #5.Harry Osborn is woken up by his mother's screams while a fire is burning down Osborn Mansion. Harry can't help his mother, who presumably dies, but he does see a monster throwing some fireballs and then leaving the place. That monster is ... Well, I kinda already gave that away already. The Green Goblin !!!! Loved Bagley's epic run on this title, and I'm very happy to have a 1st (ultimate) appearance of one of Peter's greatest foes. Social/Sharing |

Killer 1st appearance page! The eyes in the last panel say it all!

An Ultimate Spider-man page is quite great on its own--this takes it to another level. So FUN!

Wow, he really Went There in the first panel. They don't always let you see the real damage like that in the comics, with the blood, charred skin, and shards of glass. Delicately inked, too. Crisp, beautiful page, as you'd expect from this team. Thibert had great practice with super-detailed pencilers with his Adams inks. Especially love the drama of the page, and all the great glances and clever panel work. Explosive!

Fantastic page, Paul! The penciling and inking are outstanding here, but what really shines through is Mark Bagley's killer storytelling. It feels like, five issues in, Bendis and Bagley were really starting to move with confidence and momentum as people started to notice and embrace the series. I love the composition of the page - especially that middle tier, with a flash of Harry's eye sandwiched between the first shots of the Goblin, before floating panel 5 above them to really convey Harry's fear in the moment. Harry's cleanly inked reaction shots stand out (and convey the moment) perfectly among the gritty "smoldering apartment in ruins" panels. Beautiful work by Mark and Art! Great pick up, Paul! Congrats!!

Those early Ultimate Spider-Man issues helped rejuvenate Marvel in the early 2000s. Congrats on snagging such a standout page from a standout run.

Nice to see the Bagley appreciation spread to the Ultimate Spider-Man run as it was a key to the success of Marvel coming out of bankruptcy and to the innovation of modern storytelling.

Norman, what did you gone done and do?! I remember this moment distinctly - couldn't wait to see more! Love the shadowed GG, only partially lit by his flaming hand. Loved Bagley's storytelling in Ultimate Spidey and this a great example. GG arrives in awesome villainous style, no doubt. Congrats!

Wow! Stunning page! Mark Bagley is so good at telling a story visually. I love seeing the silhouette of Peter in that opening panel and then cutting to the creaturing rising above him in flame and then cutting to Peter's eyes opening wide in surprise. So great!

Thanks for the great comment and observations, Bill! I agree that Mark Bagley is a fantastic story teller. That's actually Harry Osborn though, not Peter. And unfortunately that's Harry's mom in the first panel. All this fire and mayhem is happening at the Osborn residence. I actually thought it was Peter as well when the page was being auctioned on eBay, but then I read the issue to make sure. It's been so long since I originally read these comics. (and without that distinctive Osborn hair in the regular universe, it's hard to distinguish Harry from Peter.). Anyway, thanks as always for your comments!

Awesome Paul!!! If you're going to have any single villain first birth panel page apperance from USM, Green Goblin would be THE ONE!!! Super jealous not gonna lie lol. I have the first panel/birth apperance of Ultimate Electro though in my collection :)
