Description

Pen and ink on 11 x 17" World Color 1970 bristol board. A wonderful finished pencil cover from Gene Colan, this piece was reportedly lost in the mail on route to the Marvel offices. Replacement published cover was provided by Marie Severin. Title is a paper copy laid over bristol board, no art under title. Recent provenance includes Heritage Auctions and Mike Burkey.

A truly wonderful image with dynamic action and great form of the figures, by a master of the field at the height of his career. A far superior image to the published cover of Daredevil 67.

This is another true grail for me, a favorite artist, a favorite character, a wonderfully designed cover from a late silver age classic run.

This cover is better. The only reason I can think of for the change is that the editor wanted a higher viewpoint.

There's also a story that goes around that this was temporarily lost in the mail. But I think it is also from a time that Marie Severin was directing and producing covers for Marvel and had produced some of the previous covers in the run.
