DescriptionThis is from a 3-issue series written and drawn by Mike Grell, who took the Vlad "the Impaler" Tepesh figure from Romanian history and wove it into the Spawn mythology; basically Spawn as Dracula.I only had the ability to read issue 2 for many years so that is the one I am most fond of, which made my day to have won this from a sentimental perspective. From an artistic end of things, Grells tight pencils were the finished work and I feel they translated remarkably well from a slightly smaller format than the printed results. Rob Prior did separate, finished paintings of Grells pencils for every page of this series and they are unique as they are beautiful. Being a huge fan of the Coppola Dracula film (rubbish accents aside), I feel like Grells telling did a excellent job capturing the horror and eroticism elements of Draculas story in a way that I could really sink my teeth into as an adolescent. (There has to be at least one vampire pun;) Social/Sharing |

It was really out there as one of the early Spawn spin off miniseries that achieved a prestige level as it had paints direct over pencils. With Grell's name attached, it was great to see Spawn interpreted that way with a touch of class. Of all the things, the lace garter belt got censored?

I remember feeling a bit of the Uncanny Valley effect while reading it, the paints over pencils were something completely new to me. It definitely added a touch of sophistication as you mentioned. Also as you mention, why the garter censor? Having now seen the pencils and compared them to the painting, I think if Rob Prior fumbled anywhere it was in the attempt to supercede Grells superior penciling, such as practically changing the entire middle panel which is night and day better in graphite.
