Description

Ramona, primarily a DC artist through her career has in fact done a few things for Marvel. One such project was this single fill in issue on Fantastic Four. Inked by the legendary Joe Sinnott, this issue represents the only time these two worked together on a book.

It’s New Year’s Eve, 1972, Both Reed & Johnny are depressed that their partners are gone, Sue left the team (Reed’s fault) and Crystal & Johnny finally officially broke up in the prior issue. Medusa had just joined the team and was trying to tell them to cheer them up with some tough love. A great “turn the page” pep talk & an appropriate New Year’s message!

The page then ends with a great Ben Grimm moment where he openly states how crazy it is that that the two good looking dudes on the team are all sad and alone while he stands there with the love of his life at his arm.

Thanks to Scott Kress for making this one available. While this era of comics isn’t my focus, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to add this 50 year old gem to the collection! I’ll never say no when the chance arises to add more of Ramona’s work to my collection, especially the incredibly rare example also inked by Joe Sinnott! That’s a win/win for sure!!

Beautiful example of the era and shows how the FF have highs and lows like the rest of us.  Fradon impresses as she got to finally stretch her artistry on a flagship Marvel title that required such pathos from characters.  Sinnott's inks are as always a fine touch that brings the traditional Marvel flair.

I adore her long career working on various DC titles, but just seeing this one issue alone makes me wish she had done more FF adventures with Joe!

A very nice, human page for Marvel's First Family. Wonderful, thanks for sharing.

Thanks! It's a really great juxtaposition of emotions on full display. The New Year celebrations happening around these two sullen heroes.

Thanks! I agree! Great mix of emotions on display throughout! You know I couldn't say no to another piece from Ramona, especially given the rare creative pairing!

Oh, I had completely forgotten this issue had been done by Ramona Fradon!... It's safe to say that Joe Sinnott provides the FF smooth finishes, but, on this page at least, Ramona comes up with very strong pacing and strorytelling... Not a small feat when it comes to follow on the steps of John Buscema...

Yeah, the one and only fill in issue she did on FF. It sure is a treat to see her play in that Marvel sandbox!!

Screw you Reed, and all of your anti-1972 negativity! Some of us who came along then turned out alright, so it wasn't all bad. No wonder Sue left. All captured in this glorious panel page. It is a keeper, Carl, congrats!

It's beautiful.  Ramona really captured the New York feel.  She and Joe were a perfect match.
