DescriptionMy first purchase of 2022 was a Paul Smith piece, so it is only fitting that my first purchase of 2023 is also a Paul Smith piece. This one is very special to me. In high school, a friend of mine told me about Body Bags, a series published by Dark Horse Comics. The over-the-top nature of the book made it unusual, even in the extreme Image Comics era.I always loved Jason Pearson's artwork, which was clearly influenced by Michael Golden, but also unique. I was very sorry to find out that Mr. Pearson had passed away in December at the young age of 52. Paul Smith apparently met Pearson on the convention circuit back in the day and was an admirer. He has produced this amazing tribute to Pearson, which filters the Pearson sensibilities through Smitty's inimitable style. My friend, Evan Blasor, tipped me off about the availability of this piece and I am very grateful to him. RIP, Mr. Pearson. Ave Atque Vale. Social/Sharing |

Blanc Noir was apt in describing Body Bags with Pearson using his heavy yet sharp inks. Paul Smith accomplishes that look for Panda and Mack by holding off from his own style to get that slick 90's Pearson flourish using brush and then thin lines where shading is needed.

Thank you for the comment, Marcus! I agree; Paul sublimated his distinctive style to pay homage to Jason Pearson. I think Mr. Pearson would have loved this tribute to Panda and Mack.

Such a lovely and fitting tribute. Jason't trademark blacks have never looked better. Kudos to Smitty for capturing the essence of JP's signature style here. I'm just so moved by the fact that Paul would choose to honor Pearson in this way. This is one very special piece. And I agree with your, Jason would be proud indeed.

Thank you, Eric! I know how much Jason's work meant to you. I was perusing your CAF gallery again today and looking at your Pearson artwork. Wow. That man could draw anything and make it look dynamic and compelling. I think Smitty really captured Jason's essence with this Mack and Panda piece. And I hope that somewhere, Mr. Pearson has found the peace that seems to have eluded him in life.

Thank you, Kahlil! All the comments on this piece have mentioned the inks and it really is amazing how Paul channeled Jason Pearson's style while still retaining the unique PMS style we all know and love.
