DescriptionHere is another gem that I realized I didn’t have posted. A few years back I was able to commission this piece from Darryl. My request was for him to revisit the debut of Hal as Parallax, but this time to add the cape that later (wisely) became a permanent part of that costume. The cape just added that extra visual element that was needed to set this look apart from his classic look as Green Lantern. At the time I commissioned this, Darryl told me that he had just been itching to do this very piece, a debut redo with the cape.Hal’s villainous turn was (and is) not something universally praised, but for me, as someone who was brought into weekly comics by the events of Superman’s death & return, following Hal’s journey after the destruction of Coast City is what got me buying Green Lantern comics. To me, this journey made sense. Hal didn’t see himself as a villain, he just was in shock & driven to “save” his city as its protector. These events also gave us Kyle Rayner, another of my favorites. Of course this is comics and Hal was returned to his rightful heroic self, but these stories still have an emotional impact & I look back on them fondly. Social/Sharing |

Whether you're a fan of the story of Hal's fall from grace or not, Parallax makes a pretty awesome visual. This commission shows that!

It really is a great design, especially once that cape was added in. Also, Hal's fall from Grace (and later redemption) is one of the beauties of long form storytelling. We get tk experience the highs and lows, and honestly we also get to pick and choose what to revisit!

It was definitely a shock to Hal's character and very much in line with the 90's trend to shake things up. While others quickly recovered their mantles, Banks made it look believable with Hal finding new life as Parallax and the strong characterization of Kyle helped made it more permanent.

Kyle's popularity and acceptance also allowed them to explore Hal's journey further as The Spectre. A change that opened new & interesting characters & stories.
