Description
This is the May. Day 01. Thirty-One days of Star Wars begins...

For all those costuming stormtroopers out there, happy 501st Day (5/01).

So last year I posted a Star Wars piece each day of May, and I aim to do the same again this year.

We are going to have a slow burn start with this page from the opening of the Mace Windu series, where Mace is having a discussion with a holo of fellow Jedi Ki Adi Mundi.

Roberto Poggi inks over Denys Cowan blue lines.

This page reminds me that there was a time when Star Wars comics always had to be drawn with the likeness of the actor intact. Since the Samuel Jackson likeness isn't included here, do you know anything about whether they no longer require that for the comics?

It has always been a balance between likeness and interpretation from an artist position, but the other issue is the legal one. So for instance, one of the current story arcs involves Padmé’s surviving hand maidens which included Sabé and others. Sabé was played by Keira Knightly, and although supposed to be royal servants and body doubles for security purposes, they did not make them facially identicial. But in the current comics all of them generally just look like Natalie Portman, almost more like clones. If I had to guess, I’d say Lucasfilm doesn’t hold the rights to Keira Knightley’s likeness but probably have an agreement with Natalie and so it is intentional in the comics.

Thanks, that's interesting. I think that the entire legalities and rules governing likenesses is probably far more complicated than even we imagine.

I'm certain, as a society, it is our solemn duty to keep the entertainment lawyers busy.

'Allo, I'm Adi Mundi, I got-a Cowan pencils for you, ready?
Uno, duo, tre, quatro!

When I was a boy just about the first-of May
Jabba used to say "don't stay out-a late with the Jedi boys
Always with Windu, Ki Adi going to flunk-a school!"
Force it make-a me think all the inks that Poggi do
I can't-a get-a no kicks, Jedis got to follow rules
Boy it make-a me sick just to make-a lousy bucks
Got to feel-a like a fool
And-a Jabba used to say all-a time

Stormin’ trooper you? Hey! Gotta no respect?
What-a you t'ink you do, why you look-a so sad?
It's-a not so bad, it's-a nice-a place
Ah shaddap-a you Mace!
That's-a my Jabba!

Big accordion Solo!

Let the Star Wars begin. Awesome semi-splash in the temple. Love the detail in the city. Exited to see what the 4th will bring.

I mean, just LOVE the contemplative shot at the bottom left...that expression.  Cowan continues to kill it.  Congrats!
