Description

I’m gonna keep this “FF bad guy” thing going. Last couple posts were of Doom, and here, the Super Skrull! Just thinking about the FF villains brings to mind all the GREAT characters to come out of that book, hero and villain.

Got this commissioned from Mike at Phoenix con last year. Actually spent a good chunk of time talking with him – very nice guy! He reiterated that his favorite characters to draw, by far, are villains. So I named a couple I had on my list of commission options and he went with good ol’ Kl’rt. Love the fact that he got all four of the FF’s powers in there, and as a result, we get lotsa different colors on display! Big, too, on an 11x14 board. Takes me back to a favorite two-part story as a kid – Marvel Tales #195 and #196, drawn by Byrne. Those original printed stories were in Marvel Team-Up #61 and #62, but the Marvel Tales books were the ones I actually had. Reread ‘em over and over :)

Do have a published piece by Mike but now am glad to have checked him off the commission list! Hope you like!

Ha ha, I hear ya - you were there :) Yeah, I kinda post in themes, and hadn't gotten around to FF yet, let alone FF bad guys!  Thanks, man, and all, for the comments!

Simply sublime - McKone is doing things with color that should not be possible - congrats!!!

Gorgeous, K!  Oh, I love this one so much; all the FF's powers are perfectly represented and look dynamite, but the "Invisibility Leg" is absolutely sublime, with the colors and approach (gotta have the stone spires behind him there so we can "see" the invisibility, and I love how his leg flows into complete invisibility by the time we get down to the tip of his foot! :) ).  I even love the layers and textures given to the gray background.  But it -IS- a McKone, so brilliant colors, composition, and execution are sort of a given, aren't they? ;)  I'd imagine the only thing that could have been a surprise was him going off for a couple hours and then coming back with this beauty...  How do they -do- that?!?  Utter magic.  Or maybe cosmic rays?  Whatever the reason, it's clear to see Mike McKone uses his ample powers for good (commissions)!  Congrats, KG!  Fantastic character and artist combo!

All of McKone's colored commissions are spectacular, but as a lifelong fan of Super Skrull, this one really hits the spot. Oh, and he BETTER have drawn him using all 4 powers. If an artist DOESN'T do that for someone requesting a drawing of Super Skrull, they clearly have no clue what the character is all about. Really fun one!

Ah, you're bringing some color into our lives!!  This is a wonderful illustration of one of my favorite FF villains.  Such an interesting concept for a Fantastic Foe. The whole idea of the FF is that they are a family who blend their powers together to make themselves into a formidable team.  Whereas Super Skrull is a one-man team who has all four powers to command at once.  Makes for some great battles.  Anyway, I'm blathering.  Love the piece, and it's so cool that you got to chat with Mike as well.

Blathering's OK sometimes :)  And yeah, man, I think that comics featuring the Skrull have some of the best fight scene imagery, simply for the fact you've got those 4 powers wrapped up in one dude.  Andh he's able to use those powers simultaneously!  The 2 books I note in my description are a perfect example.  I didn't explicitly think that as a kid, but that was definitely the case.  Thanks for the add, Paul!

I have climbed art conventions
I have run through the deals
Only to be with you
Only to be with you
I have run
I have Skrulled
I have scaled these Phoenix halls
These comic hauls
Only to be with you

But I steal powers of the Fantastic Four
But I now have McKone what I'm looking for

I have kissed Benji's lips
Felt the stretching in his fingertips
Arm burned like fire
This Sue Storm desire

Mad props, wordsmith!  Impressive, and feels like it came so easy to you.  CLEARly, you didn't have to STRETCH or try too HARD to provide this FIRE!  Thanks!

A gorgeous McKone, something I haven't checked off of the list yet, but man this is a good one. The colors are gorgeous as to be expected, but the invisible leg is such a cool touch.

Kl'rt! Man, I hope he has a part in Secret Invasion 🤞🏼. This is a sweet color commission from McKone. Love that menacing pose, and the nice wash/watercolor background. Totally pops. He did an especially  nice job with the Invisible Woman portion, imo, fading out the color and creating that fantastic translucent effect. We're invaded!

FF, the First Family of Marvel.  Probably doesn't get any more iconic than Dr Doom, but any character from this universe almost has to be considered iconic.  Stan and Jack were firing on all cylinders when they created this world for us.  It's where brilliant creations like Galactus, Silver Surfer, and the Inhumans were born.  And even though he's more associated with the Avengers, the Black Panther sprung from these pages as well.  As for SS here (Super Skrull, not the other SS).  Well, only Lee & Kirby could have imagined a villain so cool that he actually possessed ALL the FF's powers.  Great choice for a commish.  And congratulations on this "fantastic" result.

Couldn't have said it better, Eric!  I don't know if there's been another book/run that had hit after hit after hit from a character standpoint.  And you KNOW FF #52 is right at the top :)  Annihilus is so cool, too - love his design.  Thanks for the add, man!

"A little bit of Human Torch on his arm

A little bit of Thing on the other arm

A little of of Sue is barely seen

I'm guessing the bendy part is due to Reed"

For those who don't know, now you know.  One of those last hits of the '90s :)

Love your FF version here, man.  Wait.  Mambo No. 4?!  :)

Thanks for the add!

Maybe it's because my first real exposure to the character was during the Steve Englehart/Rom Lim "Silver Surfer" run where the character was presented as an honorable hero of his people, but I've always had a soft spot for the character.  McKone's colors really help to bring the Super Skrull to life.

Mike McKone is quickly (and deservedly) becoming known for a master of these colored pieces. And what a great subject to put those skills on display. He's so quick with them too, and each round of 99 just keeps getting better!

Gorgeous commission by Mike McKone. What a cool image of the Super-Skrull. I love how McKone depicts each of the FF's powers on a different limb of the Skrull. The colors are perfect as well!

McKone killed it as usual.

It's just a great piece that asks that age-old question --

Soup or Skrull?
