DescriptionACQUISITION DATE: 2022SOURCE: Auction OWNER HISTORY: Unknown DIMENSIONS: 12 x 17 STOCK: 16 Field Animation Paper CREATION DATE: 1989 SIGNATURE: N/A PUBLICATION: N/A Getting back to my opening remark, Heritage did not miss a beat. Before I won the B&B piece, all they ever sent me were the comic art auction catalogs. But after that first animation win, I got not one, but TWO catalogs for their next Animation auction. Not that I’m complaining at all, but it certainly did give me quite a chuckle. Those catalogs were wonderful. And filled with so many amazing pieces that I almost wish I hadn’t looked through them. When the auction went live, I think I actually ended up tracking more pieces in that animation auction than I have ever tracked in any of their comic art auctions. LOL! I honestly thought I was going to end up buying about a half dozen pieces. But I very quickly learned (much to my dismay), that the animation auctions were indeed every bit as competitive as the comic art auctions. I did manage to win one piece though, which brings us to this absolutely delightful character study. The auction listing does not credit an artist. Instead, the description speculates that this was done by an assistant or staff animator. Surprisingly, even without a major animator’s name attached, it still went for a lot more than I reckoned (almost 3 times what I got my B&B piece for). Obviously it was under my max bid, but I honestly didn’t expect it to go anywhere near that. Ultimately, I’m happy that I won it. It’s not exactly like getting four drawings for the price of one. But more like dividing the final price by four (for each individual drawing) which made it easier to swallow. I love the linework here. So smooth, clean, and strong. And I really love the four distinct facial expressions. I was struck by how much attention was paid to the eyes in each one. I think the study does a great job of capturing the emotional range of the character. If I had to nitpick, maybe I would have liked to see an example of sadness among the expressions. But I honestly can’t complain about the drawings that are there. Just exquisite stuff. So, so, happy to add this to my Disney collection. As always, thanks for popping by. Social/Sharing |

Congrats, looks lovely! I love the little splashes of blue, while I don't think they were intentional and it's just probably the blue pencils showing from underneath, they really make the piece pop especially around the eyes!

Was wondering what it was about the eyes that I found so mesmerizing. Thanks for point that out buddy.

Life in a catalog
We're one bid and winner
And buy again auction from fall
Swimming through the void, we hear the word
We heritage and we find it all
'Cause we are the ones that want to play
Always want to own, but vig never want to pay
And these are the ones that’s not too loose
Always want displayed but you never want to lose
Ariels in the line
When you lose your mind, you free your life

Killer song. But honestly, if I look at these cute little drawings while listening to it, the music doesn't really match. A bit intense for the little mermaid I think. LOL! On the other hand, if this was a drawing of Ursula, it would have been perfect.

There WAS a Keane Ariel drawing in the auction as well. I tried to win it, but the bidding just went way beyond what I could handle. Very, very, happy with this one though. Thank you for the comment sir.

Beautiful character study of Ariel! Boy, the animator really captured the Little Mermaid's changing expressions here, from worried to winsome to skeptical--Not so easy to do. Disney animators are terrific artists and this is a great example!

So cool. Man these Disney flicks, from the Disney Renaissance era, really take me back to my younger years. And The Little Mermaid was the start of it. So cool you've got 4 distinct shots of our heroine here. Congrats, Eric!

These are GREAT studies, Eric - which shouldn't be any surprise coming from Disney, but still... A great range of expressions (from "at rest", engaged/excited, and stubborn/angry) with the beautiful, clean, fluid linework that is an animation hallmark. VERY cool to hear about your experience with animation auctions, too! Congrats, Eric!
