March 2023 marks my two-year anniversary on CAF.

Over the past couple of years, I've sought the right piece by visionary cartoonist Jim Woodring to add to my collection. Woodring is one of the most celebrated cartoonists of the past several decades, with multiple Eisner awards to his credit as well as recognition at the annual comics festival in Angoulême, France.

In case you're not familiar with Woodring's work, for the past 30 years or so he's written and drawn the adventures of a character called Frank in a place/world/plane of existence he calls the Unifactor. To be more precise, Woodring says the plots for his story are transmitted to him directly from/by the Unifactor and that what he puts on the page is more or less what he hears and sees during these transmissions.

It's fair to say that Woodring is a singular artist and when I saw this page, it checked so many boxes for me in terms of what I wanted in a piece by him:

✅ Woodring's central character, Frank
✅ Frank's acquaintance/nemesis, Manhog
✅ A mysterious, intricate, and detailed environment within the Unifactor

I'm not sure one piece is enough, though. Once you experience Woodring's Unifactor, it's easy to get drawn in. I highly recommend Woodring's latest book, One Beautiful Spring Day, which collects three previously-published graphic novels along with 100+ pages of new material. A magnificent book.

I absolutely love the patterns that occur within these breathtaking backgrounds. To say this art is unique would be an understatement.

Thanks so much for sharing this here and exposing me to an artist I was unfamiliar with. Woodring is amazing!

Wow! Now that's something you don't see very often--A Jjim Woodring page from One Beautiful Spring Day! Love Jim's fanciful designs. The characters are whimsical and the settings are magical. Congrats!

It fills in all checkmarks and fits in none of the boxes as his is a singular vision unlike anyone else in the comics landscape. It is both grotesque and beautiful. It both brings comfort and delight, yet charges the senses into to new and scary places. All of which has to be resolved in one's mind to appreciate his talent.

This is Frankly (sorry) astonishing, Mark! I've never explored the works of Jim Woodring before, and obviously need to rectify that. Thanks for pointing the way with 'One Beautiful Spring Day' - I'll definitely pick it up. That last panel completely blows my mind - SO much shading and texture; it's like watching HD technicolor through a grainy black and white television (which, as odd as it sounds, was intended as a compliment...?). Based on this example (I need to learn more!!) it's obvious that at least one of Woodring's talents lies in creating rich, verdant, "technicolor" black and white environments for his unique characters to inhabit. AWESOME example, and thanks again, Mark - can't wait to learn more.
