One from the later issues where he goes to this more Azbat costume! Maybe they saw how popular the action figure was doing and saw being associated with Batman was a good idea for the character. Epic takedown about to happen!

One thing consistent about Jean Paul Valley is that he always struggled with his identity. As the Azrael series wound down toward it's conclusion, Dennis O'Neil kept Azrael's struggle at the heart of his storytelling and again put him back in the Batman costume. While still tormented by his sworn allegiance to the order of St. Dumas, Azrael also became more of an "agent of the bat" and again donned his Azbat costume as an ally of Batman.

Indeed it does. Cariello began his comics career as a student of Joe Kubert and remained a student and a teacher at the Kubert school for many decades.
