Description

Born on the bayou.
Born on the baaayouuu! 🎶

It looks like even in the hidden depths of the swamp, where no man dares tread, they still don’t forget Leg Day. Sky’s out, thigh’s out! Here we have Swamp Thing facing off against Man-Thing for all the muck in the marsh, and I think we’re gonna need a bigger swamp.

I really dig Matt Allison’s artwork. The way he handles dark inks and light sources is wonderful, and his transformation of shadows and dark textures into deep, starry expanses with white, star-like spots is such a great trick. He absolutely nailed this DC vs Marvel commission, imo. The detail blows me away, from that amazing moon in the starry sky, to the drop shadow over Swampy’s foot and that creepy little Swampy-Skull Vine-Monster in the lower right corner, right to the two titular titans battling front-and-center in a thick, lush swamp setting. And that is one of my favorite renderings of Man-Thing, too. Ted has never looked better! Thank you to Mr Allison and the great people at Inky Knuckles. The Green approves.

Swamp dance build the core and legs like you wouldn't believe. Great commission, congrats!

Holy shit! Now THIS is the subject matter Allison's style is best suited for! A killer piece featuring each of the Big Two's muck monsters. Absolutely fabulous, J!

He really should be brought in to do a Man-Thing series. The way he handles darks, his thick lines, and all that detail. He would DESTROY that series, imo. Restart Marvel Team-Up! Thanks, Rubén.

Thank you! I have a series of DC vs Marvel commissions I'm going to get  done over time, and I've carefully selected the list of artists. When you match it up right, you can get magic, imo.

I was shocked when he sent me the scan. Waaaay above and beyond my expectations, and it was not a long wait.

The inks are so damp!  Excellent work by Allison to make you feel the force and weight behind all that mossy muck!

The ultimate team-up between the two long estranged brothers. Fun stuff.

(And I detect a Charles Burns vibe on this one).

Charles Burns! Great point, I completely agree. And they are definitely brothers from another mother. :) Thanks, Fred!

What fantastic illustrations of both characters!  Impressive surrounding scenery too!  And I hope that after they battle for a while, they'll realize they have more in common than not, and they'll go to the nearest outdoor swamp bar and hoist a couple leaf-fuls of bog sludge.  Marsh brothers forever!

Ha! That's totally the next moment (and I'm not kidding that I might double dip in the next few years and get that one, too. It would be an awesome pairing! Lol) Thank you, Paul!

Outstanding commission!  Allison's depiction of Swamp Thing is what attracted me to his art in the first place, but what an inspired commission idea to have ST face off against Man-Thing!  This is the crossover event I've been subconsciously craving.  The wooded, grassy, starry, background is wonderful.  Looking forward to his next project, which he tells me will have full backgrounds...  As other commenters have opined, he really should do a Swamp Thing and/or Man-Thing series!

Oh, I'd love to see him filling up the pages. Thanks for that tidbit, very cool! I'm going to try to do my part to mention that into existence, too. DC and Marvel are overdue for another crossover...

This is FANTASTIC, J!  Yup - love the night sky and moon here, but also the inking on those trees in the top right and left...  I was thinking Charles Burns, too, and F M beat me to it.. :)  I really dig the light and dark inks of our two protagonists, too, with Swampy on the light side and Manny on the dark.  An arresting visual composition and mix, to be sure, with a perfect blend and balance!  It's like swamp coffee!  Really fun piece that has me stoked to see what other artist/character combos you have planned for your Marvel vs. DC theme!  Congrats, J!

Swamp Coffee! Ha! We have the swampy blend you're looking for. Good stuff, Jason. And great point about the balance of light and dark inks in the characters. As for the next commission, it could be a WHILE. Have to wait on a few lists to open. :) Thank you, Jason

"This swamp ain't big enough for the both of us."

Matt really did nail it.   Particularly like those inks on MT, and Matt does not skimp on the fore or background.  Check out the details on the moon!  Great add, J, congrats!

Fantastic commission by Matt Allison! Love Matt's rendering of the two muck monsters, especially his Man-Thing! The use of blacks on Man-Thing, with the wisps of vegetation sprouting from the black, is very striking! I love the care he took with the swampy background as well, the beautifully rendered Mangrove roots and grasses give the scene a kind of creepy authenticity. Also, I can't help but smile at the pock-marked moon looming above the two combatants! Great pick-up!
