Description

I picked up this page from Swiss artist Pierangelo Boog at Lake Como Comic Art Festival in 2023, but he didn't finish (or name) this labor-of-love project until 2026. Now that the book is out, I can finally show it to the world. Boog's main job is designing stamps and currency in Switzerland.

Its cover says "A graphic novel," but it's more of a very long portfolio of South Pacific-related images (mainly beautiful women) connected by a hint of whimsical narrative which ropes in every European and American celebrity ever associated with those islands: Robert Louis Stevenson, Amelia Airheart, Captain Cook, Marlon Brando, etc. You're as likely to see a pterodactyl as a 1951 Buick Le Sabre. It's like Moana through the eyes of Hunter S. Thompson.

Each published page was assembled from various separate drawings. The published page 46 consists mainly of this art I own, plus a small decorative ribbon added across the bottom to fill out the final page length, which was probably not known in advance. See additional image for the colored, lettered final result.

The central figure in this image is the Caniff-esque bad girl "the Countess of the Two Dragons Temple." She is sending her minion Wang Zhi through a magic mirror in hopes of seizing control of the mystical Island Child. On the left side of the page, Haumea, the companion of artist Paul Gaugin on the sacred island, gives commentary. But this book is not about the plot anyway, but about Boog's amazing facility with mixed media art.

This piece was discussed on Ruben da Collector's YouTube show on July 5, 2026. Another impressive piece from the Polynesia project can be seen in this CAF gallery.

This is an incredibly impressive and stunning illustration. The rendering reminds me of the techniques used by some of the Filipino inkers and it's absilutely brilliant!

It's as intircate a work as you can have using the varying lineweights and their density to convey light and dark fantasy.
