DescriptionWrapping up a string of DC posts with this “wild” get by Travel Foreman – the cover to Animal Man #1, the start of the run with writer Jeff Lemire! This was one of DC’s New 52 launches. I gave a lot of those books a try at the time, and Animal Man was definitely one of the best IMO. Creepy and original world building and storytelling, really brought to life in the first arc by Travel’s art – really compelling stuff! And the main image here of Buddy Baker, with the detailed, layered, circulatory system, speaks to one of the big points of the first arc; the laying out of “The Red”. Like a circulatory system, The Red is a force that connects all animal life, and its “heart” is the Parliament of Limbs, where the former avatars of The Red reside now as totems. We find out in the book that Buddy’s daughter, Maxine, is an avatar. Buddy is one of the very few that can tap into The Red, but is not an avatar. Also connects in a cool way with a Swamp Thing story and “The Green”, which is, as you’d guess, the force that connects plant life. And the antagonist is “The Rot”, or “The Black”. OK, I’ll stop, lol. I’d recommend reading if you haven’t! The Buddy image also has that eerie vibe, which matches the story perfectly. But then, conversely, as I get more of a hopeful vibe, the 13 animals! The scan is solid but they’re even better in person. Just some mighty fine line work, and a nice cross of a realistic look with a traditional comic book-y one! Travel only worked the first arc before moving to another book, but him and Jeff tag teaming was a perfect way to start. Hooked me. Definitely glad to own this first image. That was used at least 6 times! First through fourth prints, a trade, and an omnibus :) Thanks, Travel! Social/Sharing |

Awesome linework and details! This must be one of the definitive Animal Man covers ever made. It's the perfect kind of cover that encapsulates so much of the story that will be told, that's why it's a great choice for the Omnibus. Congrats!

Oh, I agree, man - really does capture the ESSENCE of the run, doesnt' it?! I love that about comic images. Been poring over this one lots since I got it in-house. Thanks, Jason, and all, for the comments!

I've admired this cover many times in the past. That world tree. The animals. The grit. IMHO Animal Man is one of those overlooked gems of a character in DC's universe.
Travel Foreman is also very underrated. HIs art has some of the most delicate touches to it that you just don't see in most of today's work.
Congratulation on this incredible acquisition!

I'm not as familar with the whole DC universe and it's characters, as I'm more of a Marvel guy, but did a little digging when reading this run, and I'd agree, man. So much you can do with Buddy Baker and his world!
Travel's been super nice in our dealings on this piece, and I hope to meet him one day. And as you say, some outstanding delicate line work - and definitely unique. Appreciate the comment, brother!

I loved this book back in the day when Grant Morrison was writing it. Its great to see Animal Man again. This cover is so detailed, just a tremendous addition, Kahlil.

Thanks, WF! After Morrison's run, I think this one is right there. Morrison and Lemire's runs both added so much to the character and the mythos. If you got a chance, check it out!

Stunning and very intriguing cover, beautifully drawn! No surprise that image was used so many times. I love how the octopus and whale are walking along with the lion, giraffe, rhino, elephant and land dwelling animals 😊

The Red and The Parliament of Limbs, eh? I've never heard of that! I wonder why DC hasn't been tying Animal Man in with Swamp Thing over the last 10 years since this series came out. Seems like a natural fit if they're now using these cool aspects of the Swamp Thing universe in Animal Man. Quite the brilliant illustration, too!

100%! Time to get our lobbying on! :)
Yeah, man the crossover story made complete sense during this New 52 run, and it would be cool to see it back. Especially with the unreal ST run that Ram V and Mike Perkins have been on. You know a little something about that, right? ;)
I'd suggest just checking out the first volume/issues 1-6 of this run first to see what you think - some real good reading IMO. Thanks for the add, Ruben. And glad you like the art!

Oh, if I could talk to the animals, just imagine it
Chatting with the Red a zoo for me
Imagine buying the first cover, chatting with Black Panther
What a neat achievement it would be
If we could talk to the animals and learn their languages
Maybe Travel detour to the Green
I'd study Jeff Lemire is special, the Rot is just evil
Buddy Baker with his kid Maxine

I'm like "that song choice is TOO easy", lol. But subbing your own lyrics? Not so much! Kudos again to you Mr Wai.
"Imagine buying the first cover, chatting with Black Panther" flows particularly well, lol!
And there are some...commonalities between this cover here and the album one :) Thanks, Marcus!

Oh, man - this is AWESOME. Incredible composition with that "arterial" root system (it almost looks like wings spread out behind him?) and "The Red" is one of those brilliant ideas that makes you ask, "Why didn't anyone think of that sooner?" I need to check that series out! Great presentation of all those animals at the bottom with the thick outlines and the finely-detailed "interior" touches. This is amazing, K! Love it! Congrats on the brilliant pick up!

Wings could definitely be another intended facet of this piece that Travel incorporated...wouldn't be surprised! And yeah, man, like I told Ruben, just try out that first arc. I think you'll want continue :) The line work of the animals is crazy...so, so good. Glad you like!

I had no idea who Animal Man was. So, I cared little when I heard this was announced. Then I saw the cover. And bought the book. It's a stunning piece of art. Congrats on this intricate beauty.
