DescriptionI've always thought the Kingpin was a phenomenal Spiderman villain. He is an all-Romita created character, making his debut in ASM #50. As many of you know, Romita was heavily influenced by the stars of the silver screen. In the 1990s and 2000s, we used to talk fairly regularly on the phone. I remember one conversation where we both discovered our affinity for Frank Capra movies. One of Romita's favorite "bad guys" was Edward Arnold (not to be confused with Eddie Arnold of Green Acres fame). Do a Google on Edward Arnold - this is the Kingpin! The facial expressions and girth of Edward Arnold were the inspiration for the Kingpin! His most notable roles were in "You Can't Take it With you" and "Mr Smith Goes to Washington". Both classics. Romita and I enjoyed talking Frank Capra movies over many years. So with this backstory, you can imagine what a treat it was to land a Kingpin piece, penciled and inked by John. If anyone has any info on where this piece was used, please contact me!Social/Sharing |

That's a great profile view of Kingpin that you don't often see. The Romita pencil and inks bring that wonderful flow of his robe and the curtain behind him while he stands with straight posture like a boss figure.

Expresive and impactful - a great balance of light and dark. Congrats!
