DescriptionA moody gem from the master of watercolor simplicity, Mr. Maleev! The piece is almost monochromatic and yet filled with depth. He wields transparency, color, and shape like a master chef, creating a perfect plate of emotion with minimal line-work. He's continually blurring the comic and fine art worlds in a sophisticated way. I can't get enough. The best part is that I've been fortunate enough to chat with Alex in depth while he paints at shows. He's been most gracious in answering my many questions on technique peppered throughout his ENTIRE painting process. Truly a kind pro for a fan like myself, but also a fearless artist always exploring some new medium or technique. I've witnessed the magic happen before my eyes: "I stole this new paint/medium/paper/obscure tube of whoknowswhat from (insert comic artist name), let's see how it looks..." Spoiler, it always looks great. Probably just Bulgarian witchcraft and parlor tricks. Thanks Alex! Social/Sharing |

Looks like the opening of the Netflix show with such a solemn DD frozen still while the paint washes over him like the pain and trauma on his shoulders.

FANTASTIC Maleev, Paul (and a terrific write up)! You perfectly sum up Alex's approach to his "layers" of color, and how that deceptively (cough) "simple" approach yields such striking and genuinely brain-melting results. Watercolors have never been more indelible. Beautiful piece, with that splash of blue adding crazy depth and (oddly!) a bit of... hope? :) Terrific figure work - awesome pick up, Paul!

Thanks Jason, I couldn't agree more. Great point about the blue! There is a stormy-clouds-parted effect now that you mentioned it. Crazy depth is right...
