Description

This sketch was made at the "Strip3daagse" convention held on Saturday and Sunday October 28 & 29, 1989 in "Congresgebouw Den Haag" in The Hague. Mr. Romita was invited to attend by Juniorpress, the publisher of Marvel comics in The Netherlands at that time. He was there on both days and stayed for several hours at the Juniorpress booth. In the morning they handed out numbers and if your number was up you could make your request. The sketches were free, courtesy of Juniorpress and Marvel.

Mr. Romita would first sketch the character in pencil and then ink it with a felt tip pen. The whole drawing would take him between 15-20 minutes. I saw him do many sketches for all different characters, lots of Spidermen but also Dr. Doom, Dr. Strange, Hulk, Iron Fist, DareDevil, Kingpin etc. I even saw him draw Spider-smurf which was an fun offbeat request. For Silver Surfer he took out a chrome cilinder and put it next to the character. This would help him determine where the shading should be. A trick he learnt from John Buscema he said.

When it was my turn to make a request I told him I'd like to get Green Goblin. I think he liked that request, he seemed enthused about it. I saw him draw this piece in about 20 minutes. When he was done, he asked me if I wanted my name on it. I told him no, because I've always disliked dedications. It detracts from the art. So instead he gave me a best wishes, which I think is far better. Then he told me I could take an eraser to erase the pencil. Even back then that just seemed like desecration to me. I could never take an eraser to mr. Romita's work. So I never did and it still has all the orginal pencil and ink. I think he did an amazing job. I absolutely love this piece. Green Goblin on his glider with a lit pumpkin bomb in his hand. For me it doesn't get better than that. This piece (and the 2 others) hung on my bedroom wall my entire youth. I'm quite attached to them. They're the last pieces I'd ever sell, so don't even bother asking me.

Mr. Romita was such a kind man, dropping lots of knowledge, telling stories and answering many questions. He was absolutely lovely and patient interacting with his admiring public.

Thank you mr. Romita, you're one of the greats!

This Goblin is all jazzed up by Romita!  A great keepsake to remind you of that convention and how great of a man he was.

He was a very kind man and lots of fun to talk to. He told great stories about the MArvel Bullpen. Love his art. You showed moxy picking GG over SM. You can see it came out so well because Mr. Romita was stoked to break the usual request chain.

Looks amazingly spectacular.    I concur 700% with your assessment.  I understand.  I was lucky enough to once meet him at a show that also had John Romita Jr sitting next to him.  That was problem rare.  That's what they said.

I also have a few that I can't imagine parting with
