Description

Although his career was cut short, Arthur George Watts left a fantastic body of work. His humor and superb lines stand the test of time. Seek his work out if you are unfamiliar with it. Wonderful portraits of the era, and the hazards of the rapidly moving century. This was probably done for Punch sometime prior to the first World War. He earned a DSO for his service in the Zeebrugge Raid in 1918. Sadly lost in an air accident in 1935. His work remains as fresh today, as when it was created.

Even though you only see half their faces, Watts' art creates a full situation where it communicates everything you needed to know.

He was a great storyteller. The positions and reactions of both tell the story. I like his notes around the edges.

His figures were masterfully done. While this piece has no background, he was really wonderful at anchoring his characters in a setting. Many times, it involved really well thought out humor.
