DescriptionDay 20. Thirty-One days of Star Wars (2024 edition) continues!Today is Empire Day. The real-world Empire Day was a holiday of the British Empire that was celebrated on May 24, the birthday of Queen Victoria, and is rebranded as "Commonwealth Day" in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations. The world premiere of Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back was held in the British capital, London, on May 20, 1980, and the term "Empire Day" was used in the event's marketing. Since Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars fans and lore have co-opted that date as part of Star Wars month each May. In universe, Empire Day was the day that Sheev Palpatine declared himself Emperor of the First Galactic Empire, bringing an end to the Clone Wars. This was an unexpected gift from Scott M. This was the second of two issues in the Empire series drawn by my good friend Joe Corroney. Writer Scott Allie teamed up with Joe for this story titled "The Price of Power". Over the years I have managed to acquire six of the interior pages from this issue which also features a Velociraptor-appearing alien species. I may love dinosaurs more than Joe, but don't tell him I said that. Joe also got to draw the issue's cover, and did 4 or 5 different prelims before the editor picked a completely different layout they liked (which is Vader doing a Batman impression on a building ledge with TIEs instead of bats - see additional images). I’ll never own the published cover, as it was purchased by a Mr. George Lucas. This prelim is lovely though! MTFBWY Social/Sharing |

Scott to give the illustration, asking how you're doing now
How's the castle built off evil when you rent Mustafar out?
Just what you wanted
Look at you, cruel guy, you got it
I see Corroney and the prelims sometimes when I close my eyes
Six pages all for you sold as some forbidden paradise
I loved you Ani
Gotta laugh at the old monarchy
'Cause Padme some real big mistakes
But you make Obi Wan look fine
I should've known Sith was strange
You only come out at knights
I used to think I got art
But you Padme look so naive
The velociraptor parts
As you sunk your Sheev into me, oh
Senator, Force user
Bleedin' me dry, like the goddamn Empire

Appropriately moody, I especially like the "sunk your Sheev" line. Bravo.

Super nice of Scott - great gift and sweet prelim by Joe! I absolutely love that final cover with the Batman-esque Vader depiction with Ties. Did Joe hang onto that or did he sell it?

As you know, Lucasfilm gets first right of refusal on the SW comic art. George (or his rep) when reviewing Joe's art for issues 25 and 31 elected to pull the trigger on the end two pages of 25, and the cover to 31. So I'm sure it will be heading to the holdings of the new museum once open.

I am happy this piece found its "rightful" owner!
I'm not sure if I'm rightful or not, but sure am tickled pink! Thanks again, Scott.
