Description

"Swan Song" by Steve Mitchell.

An American unit attacks a German gun position next to a chateau. They take the position but their commanding officer can't find the demolition man, who is casing the chateau. The demolition expert finds a piano. He plays it, with flashbacks to his letter of acceptance to music school and his draft notice. The commanding officer finds him, but he at first refuses to blow up the guns, probably because the explosion will destroy the piano. He's convinced otherwise, and rigs the guns for demolition. He's ready to blow them up when he's shot by German soldiers arriving in a half track. The Germans fail in their attempt to stop the Americans. The demolition expert convinces them to leave him behind as he's dying and he would only slow them down. He goes to the piano with the detonator and when the Germans arrive, blows up the artillery and enemy soldiers as well as himself.

This page captures the force of the explosion in the first two panels, with the axel of the vehicle breaking the panel. You can fell the German soldier screaming in agony in the second panel. I'm not a fan of the drawing of the hands in this page, but the art's power really drew me in.

Great Dan Spiegle page. Can't find many artists that can give you the feeling that you are at war. I'll have to start looking at these pages. Nice pickup. I am a Dan Spiegle fan.

It's the layout that draws you right in! The circle panel seems to visually hold everything together as all hell breaks loose!
