DescriptionBackgroundMa Hunkel became one of the great characters for the Golden Age in my opinion. She debuted as the Red Tornado in All-American Comics #20 in a story that ran through several issues. The Red Tornado also was in the first meeting of the Justice Society of America, but an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction caused her to leave early (and never return). Ma's adventures were occasionally supported by her daughter, Sisty, and Scribbly's little brother, Dinky, as the Cyclone Kids. She donned a pot and long johns for a costume long before Irving Forbush became Forbush Man in Not Brand Echh #1 (August 1967) and Bob Daley as Fatman, the sidekick of Mr. America in Action Comics #42 ). According to the Cosmic Teams write-up, Ma experienced her first crime fight by helping Mr. America. If that's so, she may have inspired Bob Daley's costume. Why I Bought It Well, that's simple, Kerry Callen's work is brilliant as you can see from reading his Super Antics strips on his blog. You can see that he has a real feel for the fun aspects of the Golden Age of DCs heroes. Social/Sharing |

Kerry combines the feel of the Golden Age with a more modern visual flair. Cheers!

Very cool piece, Alex! Not only do I love Kerry Callen's rendition of The Red Tornado, but I love the fact that you included The Cyclone Kids as well. Also, it has a real Golden Age feel to it.

Defintiely shows a love of the subject matter! It's as grand as any cover or pin up from that era. Uses the limited color palette of those times to stay authentic.
