Description

I picked up my second Bloom County strip in two months (I think I have an addiction starting!). This is from 2/17/87. To set the scene, two days earlier the New York Times posted an article in the face of the AIDS epidemic, "Fact, Theory and Myth on the Spread of AIDS." With Bloom County often satirically taking aim at current events, Berke Breathed had local Bloom Picayune address the epidemic. What results in just four short panels is a funny look at Milo trying to calm his incredibly nervous editor who doesn't know how to handle this delicate but important topic. Berke masterfully takes a sensitive issue and with an increasingly anxious face provides a giggle-invoking payoff. Plus, an Opus cameo in the first panel! Excited to add this original art to my growing Bloom County collection.

It was very important as there was willful negligence in Washington in not recognizing the threat. Treating AIDS as an exclusively gay disease even into the lame duck second term when Iran-Contra and other scandals emerged to take focus off thsi danger.
