Robert Gibson Jones - Fantastic Adventures science fiction pulp cover

My wife and I had a fantastic adventure yesterday. We attended an auction at a small auction house which did not offer online bidding. Most of what was there was of no interest to us, but they did have two science fiction paintings, which we successfully added to our collection. The condition on each was hard to judge, as the glass on both was quite filthy, but once we got them home and unframed, they turned out to be in very nice shape.

This one is by artist Robert Gibson Jones, and was the cover for Fantastic Adventures September 1950, illustrating "Warrior Queen of Mars" by Rog Phillips (writing as Alexander Blade). This was one of the first pulps I bought when I was a teenager in the 1970's, so am thrilled to have picked it up. You can't go wrong with a war mammoth on the cover!


Making it even cooler, this piece was once owned by the author, whose full name was Roger Phillips Graham. He signed "R.P. Graham" on the brown paper on the reverse of the framed art, as well as Graham on the reverse of the board.
