Description

Legion of Super-Heroes is super-hard to track due to the frequent renumberings of the series. Volume 6 (2010-2011) saw the return of Paul Levitz to the writer's chair, continuing where he left off during the series' 1980s heyday, when they were DC's second best selling series, behind New Teen Titans.

This time around, Levitz' portrayal of Braniac 5 owed much to the egotistical version put forward by Mark Waid during his 2005 series. On this splash page, Brainy takes charge, giving instructions to various teams scattered across the galaxy. The worm's eye camera angle makes him look quite imposing. The Legion's large cast always poses a challenge for artists, but Cinar did a nice job giving each character a distinctive face even in pencils. Note that Mon El is also a Green Lantern in this arc.

The published page combined art from two physical sheets. One contained just Braniac; the other contained four panels used as holographic images of the other heroes. I included them in a single column to the right of the main image. You can see in the "additional images" section how the four were actually arranged on a single landscape-format page, and then how those images were placed in front of Brainy on the published page. Lightning Lad's face got covered by a caption, poor guy!

LSH Volume 6 ended when the "New 52" project forced yet another renumbering on all DC's titles, but Levitz continued through 23 issues of Volume 7 without any break in the continuity of the 31st Century.

Pretty unique to do it this way and seeing how it's achieved is very fun to look through.
