Description"That Tom Hanks noir movie was made into a comic book?" No, the comic came first, and from a DC imprint even. No comedy in this comic though; it's a grim bildungsroman about a gangster's son who learns what his daddy does all day. Max Allan Collins' story mixes Lone Wolf and Cub with details from the life of real-life mafioso John Patrick Looney. Rayner made his work available through Facebook, and I asked him to find two consecutive pages. These make a great pair because they mix the gunplay action (page 149) and father/son dynamic (page 150) which are the twin ventricles making the heart of this story beat. Here, young Michael Jr keeps the car warm while his dad does dirty work to keep them (for the moment) safe from the mob. Rayder uses surprisingly small portions (8.25"x5.25") of surprisingly small pages (14.375"x9") with surprisingly dense cross-hatching for texture, sometimes layering hatching in three different directions, or using horizontal lines of varying weight to mimic an old television screen. The gunflare is negative space, while the bloody impact is a spatter of ink. Rayner explained his technique to me: "I don’t use pens very much any more. It’s mostly all brushwork these days. When I was pen-reliant, I used to build up line width with a single .25 width nib Rotring Isograph pen. Very time consuming! I switched to brushes a few years after Perdition because I felt my work had stagnated with over dependency on line work and found a whole new lease of life!" The word balloons and sound effects are all stickers, and page 150 contains a blue-pencil instruction to move the caption from panel two to panel one, but the published page still had it in panel two. Really great as it looks like the kid is looking over to the other page witnessing his dad commit murder. After so many pages of tight hatching lines, it's not surprising he would be done with the hand cramping and time consuming drawing style.

I love this book! Richard is great to deal with. I have the page before these two. Congrats on the pick up.
