This hauntingly phenomenal page is from one of my all-time favorite stories; Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso�s Batman: Knight of Vengeance.

Over the course of just three issues, this dynamic duo found a way to deliver a truly tragic tale by flipping the Batman mythos completely upside down. Which is remarkable when you remember this self-contained arc was in service to the larger Flashpoint storyline.

Azzarello was at the top of his game on this one, and is there anyone who can do as much with so little as Risso? This masterclass of positive and negative space is deeply unsettling, especially the eyes, smile and tape in panels 2 and 3. I also love how the quick beats of the middle tier break up the images above and below. The composition and shadows of both large panels invite the eye to linger on them, so placing those three panels in the middle ensures neither image competes with the other.

The shadows speak to the evil character of the Joker more than his face reveal could.
