Description

I have become fascinated with Western/SF mashup illustrations, especially since moving to southern Arizona and being immersed in the American "old west". It is almost a subgenre with many interesting examples by various artists.

Johnny Bruck painted lots of these fun mashups. This cover by Bruck (Atlan 131, 1974) is a great example with a timely theme -- a border crossing of an illegal alien (in this case an ACTUAL alien). Bruck has clearly used the iconography of a US/Mexican border -- the "alien" immigrant even wears Mexican sarape and sandals! The border wall is depicted as a SF "force field", as the alien leaves the desert for the promise of a better life (represented by the futuristic city on the other side).

I like this quite a lot -- seems to have a late 50s era Van Dongen vibe to it, and reminds me a bit of his famous 'Pastoral' ASF cover.

Perfectly illustrates the situation of the illegal alien with an alien. I like the long stretch of the border going into the horizon as they are taking the extreme measure to protect a wide stretch of empty land against one guy.
