DescriptionJames William Buffett was born on Christmas Day, 1946, in Mississippi. But to all of us Parrot Heads, he was simply "Jimmy." Like me, my cousin Jason, who was also best man at my wedding, has made a lot of connections to Jimmy Buffett over the years. We both took his passing on September 1, 2023, pretty hard. I wrote previously, Buffett was one of the first concerts I ever saw...and I didn't even have a ticket. I bought one from a guy selling tickets in a parking lot minutes before his show. It was one of those impulsive, spur of the moment things that you do when you're a young man in your 20s. Another obvious connection is his affection for the state of Florida. He did a lot for the preservation of the environment here in Florida. He even co-founded the Save the Manatee Club which he remained active in his entire life. That organization started the Adopt-A-Manatee program to protect the endangered animals. Of course, I have lived here my whole life, and spent every summer on the Florida beaches, so I became aware of his music very early. Since his death, I loaded up a thumb drive with all of his music...an impressive 32 studio albums and 14 live albums...and it is all I have listened to whenever I am driving in my truck. My goal was to immerse myself in Margaritaville! My cousin, however, took a different approach. He sat down and sketched a picture of Jimmy as the Jolly Mon from the song "Jolly Mon Sing" (1985). Keep in mind, he is not an artist and doesn't ever draw anything, so this was a rare moment. He presented the 8"x10" sketch to me during Thanksgiving and I immediately saw the potential to do something similar to the Jimmy Buffett T-shirts we use to wear. The story of the Jolly Mon is a tale of adventure involving friendship, pirates, and a very helpful dolphin. Buffett loved the story so much that he and his daughter turned it into a children's book in 1988. With this commission, I also seized the opportunity to reference other Buffett songs, for example placing a margarita in the picture as a nod to that hit. Buffett was an original, and a one of a kind that we will truly miss. Reportedly, on his deathbed, the last words he whispered to his sister were, "Have fun." Thank you, Jason, and thank you, Jimmy! “It takes no more time to see the good side of life than the bad.” “It’s important to have as much fun as possible while we’re here. It balances out the times when the minefield of life explodes.” "If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane!" Social/Sharing |
