Description

HIT IT!

I'd just turned 10 years old when this issue came out. My older brother Ray was reading Moon Knight, and Sienkiewicz was an obsession in our house. He immediately took to this issue, and 40+ years later it's still one of the most important books to us, but most especially to him.

Also shown as published.

Next time I'm in San Diego, I want to hand deliver this art into the good hands of Mikail and exchange some worthy whiskey for his impeccable skills in making the overlay we've always wanted to complete this piece.

In 2018, Scott Dunbier/IDW published it in the Mutants and Moon Knights...and Assassins Artifact Edition (also shown here)

Ghanbari family collection with my brother Ray.

In 8th grade, a friend gave me his first three issues of Moon Knight to read, which became the first Marvel title I began collecting. I loved Bill Sienkiewicz's work because initially, it looked so much like Neal Adams. However, as my tiny brain had developed around Curt Swan, Dick Dillin, and George Pérez, I had a real difficulty following Sienkiewicz's art when it became more abstract. But in recent years, I have learned to really appreciate it. Would love to own one of his MK pages someday.

I guess I'm not alone in saying that I was initially drawn to Sienkiewicz because of the strong Adams influence in his early work.  What's key with the orignal Moon Knight series is that this is where you can actually track how Bill starts to become less and less Adams, and more and more Sienkiewicz.  It's no surprise how much you and your brother treasure these works.  They're brilliant and beautiful.

Those older Sienkiewicz pages are notorious for missing overlays. Great page, and it'll be great to see it with a recreated overlay!

There will be not hitting, but the impact is steeped in psychological warfare that Sienkieiwicz and Moon Knight engages in by subverting expectations in this child abuse story to break the circle of violence.  Neal Adams / Continuity style still in play, but there is no way the crayon art would have been done by anyone else but Bill.

This was the period where Bill not only evolved himself but helped comics evolve to another level.  With out this there was no Vertigo, Sandman and everything else that came from this experimentation that Bill was doing.  Now looking back at this I can see the Drake/Adams, Toppi, Breccia, Battaglia, Peak influences that Bill canabalized in creating his style and bringing it to mainstream Amercian comics.

Sienkiewicz is the master.  It is amazing to see his talent in the raw as he grew into  the artist transcending mediums,  The use of blacks to define the body of Moon Knight offset by the outline cape is so distinctive.  The fift panel is the most perfect Moon Knight expression. What a great page, congrats!

Wonderful and emotional page from the Moon Knight run. The nostalgia factor makes a great page that much greater!
