DescriptionLatest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #159, drawn by regular contributor Luis Rivera, and based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case the Paul Ryan / Danny Bulandi cover to Avengers West Coast #69.Title: "To Everything, There Is A Season!" Story: Christmas Eve, 1942 - and Commander Steel is on the trail of Baron Blitzkrieg! Rejecting offers of assistance from his fellow All-Stars on the West Coast (some of whom remain in reserve, while others have returned to Fawcett City and New York), Hank Heywood is tracking down his deadliest enemy, who had fled when the giant Japanese submarine which had housed the Samuroids was captured by the Squadron in the last issue. Translating and analysing messages on the sub, Heywood believes that he has identified the Baron's target, so - with the aid of the local police force - he speeds to the Mare Island Naval Yard! Meanwhile, at the Naval Yard, Under-Secretary Of The Navy James Forrestal and Army Chief Of Staff George C Marshall arrive, to view the progress of shipbuilding and confer with the shipyard's heads about the construction of material which will be needed in 1943 to accelerate the War in the Pacific. As the two senior figures enter their meeting, the shipyard comes under attack by the flying figure of Baron Blitzkrieg, who uses his deadly eye-beams to wreak havoc! Without the Samuroids in supprt, he will not be able to guarantee to destroy the vessels under construction, but his primary objective was always to capture or kill FDR's right-hand-men. As the attack continues, Commander Steel jumps over the shipyard fence - to the temporary astonishment of the guards, until they recognise his costume - and heads for the scene of the devastation, where he's able to lend a quick hand in lifting a fallen section of warship hull and freeing the workers who had been trapped beneath it. However, his assistance efforts are cut short when he spots Baron Blitzkrieg heading towards the main administration building, and he charges to intercept the villain! Just as the Baron is about to use his eye-beams to incinerate the two high-ranking military leaders, Commander Steel leaps into the air and tackles him, throwing off his aim and allowing Forrestal and Marshall to scramble to shelter. The force of Steel's attack hurls both hero and villain to the ground, where they face off and start to exchange punches - with Blitzkrieg initially gaining the upper hand! Commander Steel's memories of being temporarily under the Baron's control - in issues #8-9 - resurface, and he gets a second wind, throwing punch after furious punch, and eventually wearing the villain down. As the battle continues, moving across the shipyard and toward the water's edge, Commander Steel has Blitzkrieg on the defensive - until, with a final blow as the two stumble into the ocean, the patriotic hero knocks the Baron down --- and out! Dragging the unconscious villain back out of the water, Commander Steel sees that Superman - who had been shadowing him, but who had not interfered in the battle - is helping in putting out the fires started by Blitzkrieg's assault, and in rescuing shipyard workers, whilst Miss America and Batman are ensuing the safety of Marshall and Forrestal. The battle is over, and the All-Stars have captured one of their deadliest enemies - as Miss America puts it, what more could they want for Christmas? The day seems complete - until a news report is heard over the shipyard's tannoy system: on the East Coast, it seems that the Justice Society Of America have gone missing! To be continued - in All-Star Squadron Special #1, coming soon! Social/Sharing |
