Description

DC kid. Always was and always will be.

I like an occasional Marvel thing (like Elektra: Assassin, Miller’s Daredevil, and Fraction’s Hawkeye), but I like DC more. From goofy to grimdark, DC is able to embrace and execute nearly any concept most earnestly. That I do like some Marvel is particularly relevant to this DC page.

One of the things DC’s done quite well, and that I dig the most, is metafictional storytelling, from Flash #123 to Flash #776, from Ambush Bug to Animal Man, and from Bat-Mite commissioning his own feature in Detective Comics #482 to the oft-overlooked and batshit insane Doctor 13 tale we find here, Architecture & Mortality (which is represented by this delightful Cliff Chiang piece). These stories can truly make the reader complicit in the fates of the characters they read.

In this Brian Azzarello story, a group of forgotten DC characters (including here, I,...Vampire from House of Mystery and Julius of The Primate Platoon from Weird War Tales) must justify their existence to Those Who Decide Who’s Who - The Architects of the Universe (masked versions of Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, Geoff Johns and Mark Waid).

This page I particularly like because the metafictional aspects are highlighted by the panel of, equivocally, Marvel characters riding the Metropolis subway with Clark Kent.

And as Chiang has done very little work at Marvel, this may be one of precious few examples of him rendering Logan, Matt Murdock, or Peter Parker. In fact, I can’t find a published Wolverine or Daredevil as of this writing.

Additionally, the action and absurdity of the vampire, Andrew Bennett, getting smashed by a subway train while Terrence Thirteen is moved out of the way by a Nazi Gorilla is fun.

I’ve been a Chiang fan going all the way back to the “Josie Mac” backups in Detective Comics. I love his clear, clean-lined style and how he uses the white of the page. Look at how he depicts the bright light shining on Bennett with just line thickness. He is very much an under-appreciated master.

And bricks.

On my page Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen check out the Ultimates Universe, and Tony Stark hits on Lois!

Nice! I love when there's a little something extra in the content like unofficial crossovers.

Love the Easter egg inclusion of the Marvel characters.  Always fun when characters from one publishing universe cameo in the other.  Congrats on a great pickup!

Great page.  You've inspired to me to hunt this down.  Chiang's art is just incredible.
