Continuing to share pages from my Silver Age Archie collection.

This time we have the opening page to the first story called "That's Gratitude" from Archie's best pal Jughead's own standalone title/series of Jughead issue #142, released in 1967 with art by Bill Vigoda.

Archie and Jughead check in with Betty & Veronica at the diner, as they are concerned about Mr. Weatherbee being in the hospital after breaking his leg.

I know the feeling, Mr. Weatherbee! LOL.

They visit him at the hospital on subsequent pages in the 6 page story where some hospital hijinks occur with his bad leg and the medical "expertise" of Archie and Jughead cause problems. Too traumatic to post right now but I'll get to it after I've had more time to heal haha.

Glad I own the full story though this is a fun one. I can't seem to track down a writer credit for who wrote this though if anyone is an encyclopedia of knowledge on older Archie please chime in!

Hahahaha - sorry for laughing but a very appropriate page for you! You can definitely feel his pain. I saw the step count on Insta - glad you're on the mend!

I love the classic vibes on this page, from the styling of the outfits to the diner setting. Pure Riverdale.

Kavi came from New Jersey with OA
Has Medicaid just for his broken leg
Plucked the artwork Archie page
Saved his legs and visit Weatherbee

He says, "Hey, babe
Take a walk on the art line"
Said, "Hey, Roni
Take a walk on the art line"

Archie came from out on Long Island
In the art room he was every Betty’s darling
But Vigoda was on Jughead
And Weatherbee was stuck in bed

He says, "Hey, babe
Take Ms. Lodge to the wild side"
Said, "Hey, babe
Chok'lit Shoppe on the wild side"

And then Archie’s girls go
"Doo do doo do doo do do doo..."

Hey, maybe owing this story was a L'il Jinx which caused you to break your own leg! I would own this splash just for those absolutely FAB late 60's outfits the girls are wearing. So amazing!

By the way, although he's focused primarily on the artists, check with my friend Bob Kopman via his gallery. If anyone might know or at least give you a narrowed sown list of who the writer might be, it's Bob.

Hi Kavi. Nice story. Like a few of the other Archie comics stalworth artists, Vigoda was with the company for decades, starting in the early '40s right up until his death in 1973.

As for the writer. I'm not sure, but it was likely either Frank Doyle or George Gladir who wrote this. As far as I know, they wrote the lion's share of the stories around this time.

Terrific 1967 Jughead page from Bill Vigoda. i hate to admit it, but I read a few Archie comics in my youth. They always seemed to live a happier, less anxiety-ridden life than I lived. No gangs, no drugs, no violence. It wasn't teenage life the way I experienced it. But a guy could dream....
