In a lengthy sequence, May Frayn and her friends Dan and Sara attempt to escape the flooding hotel. Sara apologizes for her previous alliance with the story's villains:
“Listen, May. I was unconscious, but you woke me up to take me with you. After what I did. I...I don't understand... How can you trust me?”
“Because you didn't betray me. When I spoke to Legs, you understood that I was warning her that I was in trouble. The tone I used wasn't the friendly one you had heard me talk to her with, here at the hotel.”
“So, you realized that I understood. And I kept quiet because... well... things went differently than I expected. Shon wanted to kill you!”
“It's a little late for such reflections, don't you think? And now is not the time anyway. We have to get out of here!”
“Yes, certainly. But the others will be upon us. They won't let us escape!”
“It's true, Sara...And what's more, we're not in a good place! I have the damage report on video and unfortunately the tanks are destroyed... at this point I don't know how we can get out of this situation.”
“You said it, Dan. If the hotel can't be raised to the surface, we'll have to come out. And given the depth we're at, there's only one way: your bathyscaphe!”
“I remember that ridge, Dan. We went over it in the bathyscaphe, and I saw that it was made of volcanic rock! It's strange that the windows resisted the impact!”
“Well, the fact remains that there is no water here.”
“Strange... this door is closed…”
“Maybe I spoke too soon!”
“What do you mean?”
“The backup generator also powers the sensors that block the doors of flooded areas.”
“It wasn't needed. Do you mean that beyond this area, there is only water?”
“To find out, we would have to manually unlock the door.”
“So, this is how we sign our death warrants!”
I put these two pages together because unlike the intervening pages, they are part of the same scene. As often happens in Euro-art, Verdi places cartoonish figures in more fully realized backgrounds, like the control room seen here. Note the stylized "A" for "Alfa Agency" on May's breast.
