very cool vintage Infantino Marcos Star Wars page from the UK Weekly run - def interesting how the exclusive art to these issues were developed and incorporated.
Wookie of the Year!
Lots of great Infantino-isms int he artwork! The Han faces are very much his own, but the Wookiee art is very universal. The backstory of these placeholders and timing of them are very informative about how Marvel did business with these big properties.
I've speculated that the reason behind UK-Weekly exclusive stories was much simpler - a typical US issue was divided into thirds when published in the UK, which left a week every month with content to fill. A few 'inventory' stories were developed to fill the extra schedule.
There was no shortage of Marvel inventory stories in the '70s and '80s, even more than Star Wars was The Avengers which seemingly had dozens. But inventory takes nothing away from the fabulous fur balls on this page!
Beautiful!
How cool is this page? A 1979 Star Wars page from Carmine Infantino and Pablo Marcos! Wow, that's pretty early! It's a fun page with Han Solo and Chewbacca. I love the expression on Chewie's face in panel two. And the crazy battle scene in panel three between two Wookies is a hoot! Fabulous find, congrats!
