Really nice page. Sinnott's inking over Buscema is always great. Did Buscema use the Kirby Kracke for many issues after taking over the book?

he did, as did others who came along later like Rich Buckler

A wonderful splash from this series. I'm freaking out a bit, realizing that it has already been 25 years since this came out!

Nice art, of course, but I have to admit I've never heard of this title.

Hell, I owned a comic book store at the time and I don't remember it.

Patience is indeed a virtue!  I first read these great stories in Astonishing Tales when I was collecting back issues in the early 1980's, at that time I was not aware of who Wally Wood was, I just knew I really liked his artwork!  Having multiple panels with Dr. Doom plus the added bonus of the Red Skull in the final panel makes this page one that was well worth the wait!  Big congratulations on adding this beauty to your incredible collection!

Thanks, muc apprecisted and great seeing you last week --- albeit too briefly!

Dave is an incredible talent, so much so that very few artist/writers could have pulled off this page as successfully as Dave.  It should also be noted that Dave has also won awards for his lettering, which was brilliant!

Good point. I love top shelf lettering on a page.

Terrific story, rounding out your beautiful new art post!  Congrats on landing a piece that is not only tied in to some pretty great memories, but is a pretty incredible piece in its own right.  (Does your buddy Bob collect comic art?  Did you tell him you got this one? ;) )

I really enjoyed Alex's work on 'Lando', but didn't know he did much other Star Wars work than that (pardon my ignorance)...  I should look some more up - this is really great work.  Congrats again!

Thanks! I love the piece!

Bob and I lost track of each other over the decades. He wasn't a huge comic book fan at the time, but anything is possible.

Best,

Greg

It’s so cool to see this again! It was one of the very first covers I ever owned many years ago and one of the biggest lessons I ever learned in the hobby: learn about the different terms before you buy. I had no idea what a lightboxed cover from Kirby pencils was and by the time I did learn, I had let another collector completely talk me out of wanting to own it (another lesson: don’t always listen to other collectors’ opinions; form your own) and I traded it away, cheaply. It is a beautiful, published cover and, in my opinion, is perfectly lightbox inked by Rude to make a very dynamic and smooth Kirby trade paperback cover! It’s so nice to see this one pop up again! Congrats on owning it!

Thank you!

I do feel your pain Michael, having traded away some amazing pieces over the years for the wrong reasons.

I, for one, do not have an issue with lightbox pages --- or blueline in some caes ---as  it is the only way some things are created. And of course, it's still the printed piece.

This is an especially unusual case, because Steve in all likiehood completely repencilled it before he inked it. Some day I hope to ask him about it.

I agree to all your descriptions. John Buscema ruled the waves of Marvels sea in the 70s and 80s together with Joe Sinnott. Great page from a very nice issue (artwise, I always thought that in these issues the art was top while the story was so lala and sometimes quite repetitive. I love the dragon (I also have have a 238 dragon page in my collection)!

Agree --- I think the writing was inconsistent, and sometimes dragged a bit. But oh that art!

Love this! Besides loving the X-Files, I really dig stained glass in comic pages. It usually has such a dramatic impact. Curious here why the stained glass has more of a cartoony feel? Was this relevant to the story or just Charlie's style?

Oddly, the stain Glass itself is aconbination  original art correction / stat on the board. Matbe he has trouble with it?

But I think that was style, as opposed to story.
